Did Guild ever produce a Classical or Nylon strung guitar built anywhere, other that the US or now China?

Bonus Question: The Mark series was produced at Hoboken and Westerly, were they ever produced at Corona? By the time of the move to Tacoma, they had become part of the GAD line and built in China, I think.

Thanks,

~nw

I think at one point there was a Guild distributed nylon string from Spain, but not sure if they were marketed as Guilds or as "fill in the blank" distributed by Guilds. Likewise, I'm pretty certain the Mark series died before any production moved to CA, but again I'm not sure.

Hello folks,

The guitar is question is a legitimate Guild but then again it's not, since it was not made at the Guild factory.

These were made in Spain during the early '90s, since Guild at the time did not have a classical guitar line. The line consisted of various models and they were very good student grade classical guitars, built in the true Spanish tradition.

That's about all I want to say about it now.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Can anyone add to this?

That's cool NW. I too recall seeing authentic looking Guild classicals that were made in Spain, but I didn't pay much mind because they weren't what I was looking for. I remember seeing the second thread; the first one was before I joined. I really love my Mark V. :D

Thanks Brad and Sandy, for the responses.

I came across this today:

Guild_Spain.JPG

Wasn't sure what I was looking at. Hans had the answer, as usual. I've only recently become interested in Guild Classical guitars and probably ignored these threads, the first time around.

Sandy, are there pictures of your Mark V posted here at LTG?

I'd love to take a look.

That must explain this one, that has been languishing on GC's used site for quite some time now.

Original thread here. The guitar is absolutely magnificent, only exceeded by the Mark VI that Tom scored when he kindly sold me mine. 8)

Thanks Sandy, but my VI only exceeds your V in age. That's it!

Here are some pictures of my Mark V:

Back:

Spanish Foot:

As I've said in other posts, when I was in a B.Mus. performance program, it more than held its own in sound and playability compared to several Ramirez Concert models. The only problem I had (other than a few dings from 35 years of playing it) was that the rollers on the tuners would twist so that when the strings needed changing I would have to rotate the plastic (?) sleeve or the hole was misaligned so badly that the strings wouldn't go through. I changed the tuners so that was eliminated. New Tuners:

That means that it is not all original, but these tuners are a little better than the originals.

That's a beauty, Brad. I can't begin to say how much I love mine. I'm also surprised how many Mark VIs (well, three I've seen now) that have damage from a flat pick. My Mark V has never had a flat pick touch it, and never will as long as I own it.

On another note, what kind of replacement tuners did you use? They look just like the OEMs.

Hey Dave, was that one near-mint and for sale? If so, I know a certain LadyTexan that would be very interested.

Yes, thanks for jogging my memory. I would have kept the OEMs from the 70s if it weren't for the twisting sleeve.
As to flatpicks, I have occasionally used a felt flatpick on mine, but the only real ding on the top came when I dropped a tuning fork on the lower bout. There's also a chunk of finish missing from the back of the neck that I have no idea how it came to be.

The pic of the label I posted, is from that very guitar. I thought maybe it was a knock-off and requested a picture of the label. It's actually a pretty nice looking guitar, from what I can see. I think the back and sides are laminated Rosewood, though.

Thanks, Sandy. I thought there were some pics of your Mark V floating around, I just couldn't remember the whole back story.

Thanks Jane and HG!

@hg - Do you have a ball park on what years that model was produced? Mid-nineties to aught one, maybe?

Edit: It only shows up for 1993 and 1994 in the flawed, 'DatingYourGuild' list on Guild's site.
