Can anyone inform me on the quality of Guild Classical Guitars? I know there are GAD Classicals, but do they compare with the older ones handcrafted in the USA? I know this is a general question, but any information would be helpful.

Thanks!

Welcome to LTG Sefton. I have asked some very general questions here and got some really great answers. A really good group here and I have no doubt that someone much more knowledgeable then I will be along to help you out. I just wanted to say welcome. :D

Sefton,
You might sift thru this thread... although it mostly deals with the higher-end models (Marks 4, 5, and 6), there is some discussion of the lower end Marks 2 and 3.

Guild classicals are excellent guitars- I mean the US made ones Hoboken and Westerly- all solid wood from the Mark I to the Mark V

I have a Mark II and Mark IV from the 70's- All the Guild Classicals I played IMO sound better than the Gibsons and most of the Martins.

I heard a GAD classical and it sounded like a good imported classical- not great but not terrible either-

with a little persistance and luck you may find one on the 'bay for $300-$500

good luck!

I've just sold our Mark IV, she was pristine. Actually, I still need to modify my signature to reflect she no longer resides here.

I knew nothing of classicals when we got her, and still don't, but I learned a bit from the purchase of this one, mostly by reading what Hans posted in regards to the models. From what I gather, the classicals weren't considered higher end classicals until you got to the Mark V, Mark VI and Mark VII. Though I think the Mark IV was a drop dead gorgeous rosewood classical guitar, she left a little to be desired in terms of tone in my book, but keep in mind, I'm a dread guy........and that's like comparing apples and oranges.

Thanks for the posts! I'll be keeping an eye out... I can't realistically see myself paying up for a new guitar anytime soon though... my wallet is still recovering from my beloved D55. But I do find myself searching ebay and Craigslist quite often... its more of a hobby than a shopping experience!
