Wow. What a fabulous instrument! This is the one that was in Norman's Rare Guitars that jp hooked me up with. Eternal thanks for that!

This guitar is damn near mint. A little tarnish here and there on the jack and toggle, but otherwise it looks and feels like a brand new guitar. I didn't even clean it before I took the pictures. Not sure of the year. AG00145x made in Westerly RI. Last serial I can find on the web is AG000937 for 1999. I'd guess 2001 for this guitar?

It's darker than most blonds I've seen. I like it - adds a lot of character. :) Here it is next to my blond X-170, which is what blond usually looks like to me:

It's been a long while since I've played a Starfire, and I was pleasantly surprised at the width of the neck. Very nice! I bit wider it seems than the X-170 which I'm now used to.

I recently played a $2700 Gibson dot reissue ES335 that was very impressive. I've played a lot of dog 335s, but this one was very nice. This Starfire is all the guitar that one was, and less than half the price. It is an absolute sin that Fender stopped producing these.

I have a matching '73 on its way. I can't imagine it being a better guitar than this. We'll see. :)

We can tease each other about our individual-GAS's, but that is a nice set of guitars! Can't wait to see the '73 too!

You were asking before about the H1 pickups. Are those the ones you thought they'd be?

If they're the same as or similar to the ones in my '72 (and my '74 that's on the way) they sound SWEET. Nice score!

GAD, I have to ask, what is your total lot? The ones you post are always so amazing, is it "just" the 3?

As far as Guilds, yes. I try to only buy when they look and sound amazing. Sometimes it's hard to wait though. :)

Most of my guitars have stunning wood in one way or another. Take my Les Paul for example:

I usually only have one example of each style of guitar, so I try to make it special. Some things, like my Tele, are pretty plain, but they're still Ash with grain. I like the grain look on a guitar. None of my guitars are solid colors.

Having two SF4s will be temporary as the "better" one will stay and I'll sell the other.

I don't know yet. I'll probably pull them later today.

Hi GAD,

I'm so happy it was a winner. I have a suspect that the '73 will have a very different feel. Possibly a thinner profiled neck and the pickups will definitely sound differently. It'll be interesting to hear what you think once you A/B them.

Nice collection, but soon you'll have four blondes to handle!

Hello GAD,

That list is very confusing. Serial # AG000937 was the last one for 1997, not 1999.

Your guitar is from the year 2000.

Sincerely,

Thanks Hans! What a tremendous resource you are.

Can you possibly tell me when my X-170 was made? Serial# AK17121x

Thanks,

GAD

Took the strings off and cleaned it up real well, and now it's even better! :)

Check out the well-oiled beauty of a fretboard on this thing:

And if you've ever wanted to know what a Fender-made HB1 looks like, here you go:
