I don't know what they say in Berlin, in Vienna it is: "Übung macht den Meister." :)

by the F chord. What idiot invented that?
Try this: From C chord, just turn your hand slightly, pulling your wrist toward you, and you'll drop right into an F.
As they say in Berlin, Ubing mach den Meister. Or something to that effect. :D

Gonna take some work. When I do that, all I do is successfully mute every string I'm touching. Oddly enough, when I barre it, it's much better, although still not good enough. My wife had a good point though. 5 months ago, I couldn't play any of them, so this one will come around just like the others did. :)

Your wife is a wise person. I use that same line on my students.
*Just remember, it's a happy enchilada and you think you're gonna drown, that's the way the world goes round! (I know you've heard that one)

Cover that 6th string with your thumb over the top ala Hendrix and many others. Just like holding a golf club.

Tony, while you're working on the F, I suggest working on the B-flat and B as well.

They're all tough chords for beginners, so you might as well start on them early.
If you do the full barre, you're developing the same muscles for all, and working one will actually help with the others.

Plus, you'll need the B-flat with the F to play in the key of F anyway. So you might as well learn them both at once.

My $0.02 :D

Sounds like you're off to a great start. Keep working at it. It's so worthwhile once you learn to play; but it is a lot of work to learn. Be patient with yourself.

Remember that playing 10 to 15 minutes once or twice a day is better than one longer session once a week. You'll improve much faster.

I have found Tony, that you just keep plugging through. Try to play it as it is supposed to be played, keep going through the clunkers and, in time, there will be less clunkers.

Just as you found going through your first chord change, this is a chord change. It'll come.

The "F" chord; it is a road block to all young students of the guitar, and I was no exception!

They all sail along, until they hit that chord where you have to barre the first two strings, and all the while making do with the other two notes - the A and the F!

I had cuts on my index finger for weeks, until I developed a callous on that part of the finger. It hurt, but I finally got it.

Now, it's an afterthought.

You will get it too . . . just hang it there. In English, it means, just hang in there . . .

I love the memories this brings back. Just remember, being a good guitar player is always just beyond the next thing you want to learn.

F chord is a cool chord, using the same finger position up the neck you can play any major chord, any key. Roots are right there on both E strings. Lift your middle finger it's any minor chord, any key.

Learn one finger position & accomplish 25+ chords, good trade

Comes in handy when one of your LTG jam buddies records his best tune in G# major, could'a been A flat, I don't know. They should never given Graham a capo.

Here's an update regarding my ongoing battle with the F chord.

I still suck, but it's possible that a little progress has been made. Took off the mediums and put on a fresh set of lights. I doubt that made any difference, but it seems like it helped some. It seems weird to me that I can play it better as a barre chord than I can from the open position. It's embarrassing, but I'm too damn stubborn to give it up. I know you're all on the edge of your seats awaiting updates so I'll keep you posted. :)

It's most likely in your wrist.

The barre chord requires the wrist to be in flexion. The wrist is bent with the hand toward the arm.

The open chord chord requires extension. The wrist is bent with the hand away from the arm.

Try doing some wrist training with light dumbbells.

Embarassing...pfft...we all learned it at some point.

You'll get it, but it's like everything else - you have to keep at it until you train your reflexes to put your hand right where it needs to be. Muscle memory or something like that.

It's an awkward jammed-up-fingers kind of chord. It's called an "F" for a reason! The same reason "golf" is a four-letter word. ;)

Anyway, just play whatever chords you know and practice switching between them, including the F. It is similar to a C so maybe practice dropping your fingers from that position to the F. Or, practice some songs with an F in them. I find it better for me to learn something new if I have an actual song instead of just playing randomly. Or maybe make up a little arrangement of chords for yourself and practice switching between chords. When you're getting the hang of the hand placements make it a little more difficult for yourself.

That's one that always seemed like there's less room for error or "fudging" the chord. You're off a little bit and everything sounds godawful.

Also, I remember at first trying too hard and putting too much pressure on the strings trying to get those two strings barred. Relax and play with light pressure if you find yourself doing the same thing.

Keep at it and I hope you have better luck than I do with golf, which I get better at then one day it's like I've never played!
