Trying out StewMac's Pot Cleaning Cap on my '68 Starfire V, it sprayed all over the top and left a dark stain around the shaft. Any suggested remedies?

Drag! Unless there are tiny cracks in the finish I suspect the fluid soaked into the wood under the washers and nuts of volume and tone attenuators.

I can't think of anything you could do to fix the problem. I'd leave it alone and hope it disappears as the fluid dries. I wouldn't even take a hair dryer to it.

A 1968 Starfire V will have millions of little cracks in the NCL finish, so the oil went straight into the wood under the finish. Mind that also where the hole for the pot shaft in the top wood is the wood is unprotected. So it's basically oil in the wood and will not dissapear.
You can try using a bit of lighter naphta (which will not disolve NCL) on a little cloth and slightly rub over it but I don't think it will improve much (it might a bit).

No easy remedy that I can think of

As mentioned above, you now have an area of oil-soaked wood under the existing finish. Even a top-shelf repairman would be severely challenged with this one since any attempt at refinishing would undoubtedly fail unless all of the affected wood could be cleaned of the soaked in oil and/or sealed somehow

Best you can do now is try and pawn it off as "mojo"

Get a bigger knob?

Sorry, didn't mean to make "light" of your mistake here. Oh, crap, I did it again!

:)

Gotta' agree, seriously, there's nothing to be done here. Call it mojo and that's about it.

If it helps, I've got a few of my own mistakes that I've had to live with over the years. I seriously cracked my two "heirloom" guitars because I didn't know squat about humidity. I had both guitars expertly repaired, but now I have to look at those cracks every time I open the guitar. It's a humbling experience, but one I learned from.

Sometimes the finish on a guitar is not very thick or complete in the holes for a guitars electronics allowing the Deoxit to be absorbed into the wood its self.
For this reason I don't use that cap thing, it doesn't allow for enough control of the Deoxit or any other cleaner people may use. In my shop I use a small cup to spray some of the cleaner in and apply it with a small brush being careful to apply only around the pot shaft on not around the mounting threads of the pot. On a solid body guitar with an access cover for the electronics I only spray the pots from inside and if any leeks through it will be around the shaft of the pot. I always keep a paper towel around to quickly wipe up any that getsw where I don' want it. I hope this helps to prevent anymore issues like this one.

I always tried to stick the end of the "why do I always lose it" red straw into the slot/opening in the body of the pot. Takes a little finagling to get there through the f-hole sometimes. I also always used the Radio Shack "TV Tuner Cleaner," which may or may not be the same thing as Deoxit. Makes me think I've just been getting lucky not to arrive at this result -- you can even see where it wicked in a little around the little brad/nail indicator dot.

If it help ease your pain any, I can't really see the discoloration all that noticeably with the knob installed.

Just play the hell out of it!
