I still would like to know why he decided on a thinner non-paddle headstock during his era of running Guild.

Something about positioning the pegs above their respective nut slots so there is less angle in the strings iirc.
Yes indeed. Snakeheads are always the best headstocks for straight string pull. My favorite Bourgeois headstock, on my Slope D.

My Osthoff has the old headstock shape, but his new one is very "straight pull".
Old (left), New (right)

Come to think of it, the old Osthoff shape reminds me of my Madeira. Maybe there was something subliminal going on when I bought the Osthoff.

I get it, but the wide-head still looks better.
I disagree. It's one of the reasons I'm not fond of Les Paul Customs, Super 400s, White Falcons and White Penguins. It's less ugly on large body guitars, but giant headstock on an LPC or Penguin just looks stupid. Give me a snakehead any day.20230206_193821_resized.jpg

I think it's glorious. Try paddling your canoe with a snakehead!
Taken as a whole, the S-60 headstock is appropriately sized to go with the body.

I think GG went with a snakehead headstock because he's totally enamored with the Loar period L-5, to bring this full circle. And I admit, while I don't own one, it's one of my favorite guitars visually.
