I'm considering removing the pickguard from my GAD 30 and just wanted some opinions on the matter. I don't really feel one way or another about it, I just was thinking that it might clean up the look a little. Any thoughts?

Hi Joe, there's a thread about the GAD pickguards Does anyone else dislike the GAD pickguards; it's a nice place to start.

Are you talking about just removing it or replacing it? I'd like to replace mine but haven't gotten around to it yet. I did just find an interesting link pickguards that seems to have a replacement pickguard that is similar in shape to the regular Guild pickguard. They stock the small pickguards but the larger ones (Guild like) need to be special ordered. I may see what the cost and wait is.

So how do you like your GAD 30? I really like the small size of mine, it's very comfortable to play and a lot lighter than my D55. jgm

jg,

I definitely like the GAD. Mine's a 30RE and the rosewood is plenty warm. I got a good deal on it off of eBay actually. It had a crack on the top that was professionally repaired and bc that voided the warranty I paid less than half of what sweetwater or musiciansfriend charges.

Super playable, good-looking, nice and light, what's not to like. I've found that mine tends to respond best to fingerpickin' as opposed to strumming, but with the nano's medium lights I have on it, it does everything well!

Joe, be careful!

Before removing that pickguard I suggest looking at the edges very carefully, with as high a magnification as you can get. I removed the pickguard from my Tacoma D-55 to replace the stock tortise-shell guard with a traditional black one. When I had it off, I noticed that although there was finish underneath the guard, some of the finish had been applied AFTER the pickguard had been put on the guitar. Presumably the pickguard was masked.

The result was that there was less finish under the guard, with a noticable ridge in the finish along the outline of the guard. Fortunately my black replacement fit right in, so there were no issues. But it would not have been an option to leave the guitar with no pickguard because of the outline in the finish.

I don't know if the GADs have any finish applied after the pickguard is put on. You might be able to tell by looking very closely at the edge of the guard.
