I think so--more so regarding material and size. Color is probably related to material. A lot depends on individual preferences and somewhat on the instrument. There's a lot of info on the Stew Mac site.

Definately! Besides size (as in height- like jumbo mediums, etc.) the material they're made from makes a very big difference. If you are asking because you need to do a refret- I would suggest looking at Evo Gold fret wire. It's harder than std. fret wire, but not as hard (and therefore easier to work with and less expensive to have installed) than stainless steel (SS). SS frets also give you a noticable "plink"-a bright sound, when you fret a string on it.
