The holy grail of magnetic sound hole pickups & very hard to get a hold of apparently. Good job Walter! For the F47? I suspect it will dampen the acoustic sound a bit just by being there but will be interested in your take.

They're still available new. You can get them on eBay. I have no doubt it'll sound good, but I wonder how heavy those things are? They look pretty massive. Like Zelja, I'll be interested in your report!

Oh, I know they're available new, but cheaper second hand! ;-)

I have a 20 gig project coming up soon where I'm going to need a plug-in acoustic, I might take my recording King "beater" and put the Sunrise in that and give it a road test, if I like it enough, it's probably going in the F-47

Hi Walter, I've used a few Sunrise pickups. They work well on the bigger, more heavily-braced guitars; Dreads, Jumbos, etc. They are relatively heavy and will kill a lightly-braced small top, like an F20 sized guitar (in my case, it was a '40's 'Banner' LG2 Gibson . They are magnetic pickups (humbucker), and will sound good with a magnetic pickup type guitar amp. Of course, they sound better with steel stings than bronze, etc.

I used to use them with fairly sophisticated preamps, and I never had much luck just plugging one in and winging away with it.

Again, they are fairly heavy and that helps with the damping process. I've seen a lot of name players with them and have kind of concluded that if you have a good sound-man who both likes and is used to Sunrise pickups, then they are a great pickup to have in the arsenal.

Don't leave it in the guitar when you travel. Sometimes they break loose and they will absolutely hammer the inside of your acoustic!

Luck, Harry

Thanks Harry,

Well, I have a dread and a mini-jumbo, and I have a great sound man too, so I'm covered there. And I was planning on getting a nice preamp anyway. I've loved the Sunrise pickups I've heard, some from a distance in the crowd, some up close and personal with other people using them in a band I was in.

I've come to dislike the sound of piezos, even expensive systems, and I have a K&K in a guitar that is a little too sensitive to feedback for my uses, and a little too woolly/blurry sounding.

Well done, Walter. I look forward to hearing your thoughts once you have had a chance to play with the Sunrise for a while.
