Must be a real thrill for some. For me it might end in a thrilling ambulance ride. :emmersed:

Very cool, looks like a ton of fun.
Without wanting to claim there is no risk associated with this run, it is in fact a very limited one (for an able body), as long as you have basic whitewater kayaking experience where balancing your body weight is key.
The banks of the canal are making sure the kayak stays in line with a minimum help of the paddle, eliminating the risk to go sideways, and the landing in a lake setting makes it very safe, with plenty of room in relatively calm waters, should you need to roll back up.
I would still have worn a helmet though, and hate to see the gouges and scratches at the bottom of the kayak after that...... it's going pretty fast!

I agree with your assessment that the basic experience of the paddler, shape of the canal, and the relatively safe landing spot make this not so big a deal....it's those "gouges and scratches" that would concern me, especially the gouges!

Just sayin',

So that's what those short stubby kayaks are for!

A person could pick up a bit of road rash if things went bad.

I had an uncle who told tales of he & his friends his friends, way back when, water skiing (sp) in irrigation canals, towed behind a 40 Ford coupe. Most of them lived relatively long lives, go figure.

Came upon a group of young knuckleheads a couple years ago in late winter doing that in the ditch of a well traveled county road. There had been a couple of unusually warm and sunny days and the snow in the ditch on the sunny side of the road had melted some was filled with open water. The car was traveling on the shoulder against traffic when I saw them (must have been a return trip).
I found out their names a couple of weeks later in the newspaper under the county court convictions. Reckless endangerment, careless driving and a host of other violations.
What were they thinking?
