I tried flatwounds in a pinch and I couldn’t get them off the guitar fast enough when it was all said and done. They just sounded like old dead strings straight out of the box, not much for clarity or note definition. Those and silk and steels were strings I tried and hated so much that I changed them out after a week. Was probably wasteful but those strings had nothing to offer for me. I also pieced together a Lowell George strat and even went as far as putting 13 gauge flatwound strings on the guitar. Again I hated the strings so much that I had them on the guitar for a week tops before realizing that I don’t play slide so 13’s aren't for me unless I was dead set on destroying my hands. I have a friend who swears by some silver strings Black Diamond sells but given my luck with veering away from plain old phosphor bronze I don’t think I’ll bother.

try the Martin Retro strings. the 11's and 12's are great sets. However if u are referring to your D-55, I would also try John Pearse strings (550SL=11's, 600SL=12's).

Once I bought a SF-2 that arrived with flat wounds on it. my first and last experience with this type of string.
