Just recently purchased my first Guild off of ebay - a CV-1 F-40 for about $900...it came two days ago and I'm loving it so far!

Any recommendations on taking care of this beauty, or on optimizing the sound?

Thanks!
Matt

Hey Matt, welcome to LTG.

The CV-1 is a beauty and proper care is a must. The C actually stands for Canada, which is where that guitar needs to spend the spring, summer and fall. The Canadian climate is much more suitable and that is probably a reason you got a good deal on eBay. Not too may folks want to send their guitars away for 3/4 of the year, however the months that you do get to play her will be worth it.

I am the forum member responsible for Canada East, which accepts guitars from the 48 contiguous states. There are 2 other forunites from Canada, John Kidder, who looks after the Alaskan inventory and Steffan who looks after guitars arriving from Hawaii.

Just send a PM to me and I'll make all arrangements for it's safe and secure shipping.

Relax and enjoy the site. :D

Hi Matt and welcome to LTG; I just wanted to point out the importance of year-round humidity in keeping those pesky deck cracks from appearing and am prepared, provided you pay round-trip shipping, to host your guitar here in Florida where the humidity will keep your guitar physically fit and in great tone ... and all at no further expense to you! Tone tips? the usual route is a new nut/saddle/bridge pins from harder, denser material than what's on your guitar - tusq, graphite, bone, fossilized walrus finger ... whatever ... the plastic fittings absorb more energy ... harder material does a better job of transmitting energy to the instrument; welcome and good luck! (I always liked sunbust finishes...... )

Matt, welcome to the Guild site - I'm sorry you were savaged by some of the more disreputable members as soon as you arrived

Blah, blah, blah, bleedin' bloody blah. My hovercraft is full of eels. If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me? It's not pinin, it's passed on. Yada, yada, bleedin' bloody yada.

Hey who let Jerry back in here?

Never mind those guys. Here's a picture of Graham, Jerry and the Cap'n at their last get-together:

Now I'll give you some sage advice like you requested:

1. Always keep her in the case when not being played.
2. Keep some Dunlop spray wax and a nice microfiber towel inside the case and wipe down the guitar after playing/before storing in the case. Use a separate cloth for wiping off the strings & fretboard.
3. Feed the fretboard on occasion with a little linseed oil or Fast-Fret.
4. Buy and use a guitar humidifier of some sort (I use the Kyser Lifeguard, pretty simple)
5. Exercise the guitar frequently :D

She's a beauty, Mac! Welcome and post often.

Hi Matt,
Welcome to Lets Talk Guild (or Loonies Talking Guitars, depending on who’s doing the post). Congrats on the CV-1 F-40! It’s a beauty for sure. :) Proper care and tone have pretty much been covered by capnjuan and dreadnut, but will offer up two more suggestions. IF you don’t already have one, get a guitar stand; one that supports the neck as well as the body. Even if you store it in the case, there are times you need to put it down just for a moment, and then it happens! The earth cocks a celestial leg; let’s go with a left cheek sneak, setting up a vibration that slides your beloved guitar across the wall scratching the headstock, and smashing it to the floor with a force reminiscent of Thor throwing his hammer. And there you are. Kneeling, holding the guitar in one hand and the broken off, badly scratched headstock in the other looking up to the heavens screaming, “Oh the humanity…oh the humanity!” Then you’ll spend the next six years with a support group trying to get the nightmares to end. I…I don’t want to talk about it any more…it’s just too painful. Where was I…oh yea…for the love of Guild man…get a guitar stand! The second thing is this; to keep the finish forever beautiful, if you’re taking it from one temperature to another…give the guitar 30 minuets to an hour to acclimate it’s self BEFORE opening the case. Ever see a guitar with spider web cracks in the finish? That’s how that happens. Again, welcome to LTG. :D

Welcome Matt, that's a beautiful guitar.

Wise advice. Time spent in the dry climate of Colorado might be just the thing to really exercise it. Time in Canada, Florida, and GB should be balanced and we're willing and eager to help.

Enjoy it.

Thanks guys - looks like my new guitar will quickly become a world traveler!
A stop in Massachusetts might be required!

Welcome aboard, and congrats on that beautiful contemporary model. Not a ton of these around, and being based on the F-40 body, it should be a real honey.

I wonder if they'll move forward with these in New Hartford... Haven't heard anything about the COs or CVs...

Welcome to the forum, Matt.
That's a beauitful guitar.

I refused to participate in the antics of the riff-raff above because I'm much more sophisticated. 8)
