Welcome!
If you don't want to buy used then looking for a new old stock (nos) Tacoma DV4/6 seems a good idea to me. Of course they are no D40/50, but list price is about 1/3 of the big ones. And Retailers might sell way below the list price as it is new old stock and obviously didn’t sell for quite a while …

And I love my Tacoma DV4!
Markus :D

An option between play before you pay and the eBay gamble is to look for reputable music stores that sell on line. Many of these have their own repair facilities and are pretty careful about making sure that the instruments they sell are in good condition, and if something goes wrong you have an established business to deal with. I bought a guitar unseen from Spruce tree Music in Madison, Wisconsin some years back... the instrument was exactly as described and they were very easy to deal with. Might have got it cheaper on an eBay buy but if I was gonna do it again I'd do it the same way.

Steffan,

It's in Dayville CT, just north of New London and Groton, where that D40 I'm lusting after is. Road trip!

Welcome to LTG and have fun getting your first Guild, and believe me, if you hang around here very long it will be your first of many. I agree with everything posted, another thing about this brother/sisterhood is that we just love to help other LTGers. If we have a member near a Guild that needs a test drive we're glad to go and play it then report back. Keep an eye on New posts ebay/craigslist/gbase offerings in the Members Cove as well as FS/FT. The next best thing to getting another Guild for yourself is helping another LTGer get one. We also like to keep good Guilds in the family so this is where you'll find our guitars first.

Again, welcome, kick your shoes off, relax your mind. joan

Hello Jimmy, and welcome to LTG.

Lots of the Guild guitars mentioned above do sound fantastic. The danger with purchasing an old Guild sight unseen is that a lot of older Guilds are in need of neck resets. I've seen many. That means that the guitar is collapsing in on itself; the neck is pulling forward, and the strings are too high off of the fret board for easy playing. It would be a real tragedy for you to stumble into that when buying your first quality acoustic guitar.
Here is an article that discusses proper neck angle on an acoustic guitar, and how to examine the neck angle.
http://www.frets.com/FRETSPages/Musician/Guitar/Setup/NeckAngle/neckangle.html

In a simplified summary: if you sight down the neck, the neck should be straight or almost straight. A slight dip around the 5th fret is o.k. That's called relief and is supposed to be there. Any other humps or twists are a major red flag. Also, when you sight down the neck, an imaginary line along the top of the frets shoud hit just at the top of the bridge, and there should be at least 1/8 inch of saddle visible above the bridge. If the line of sight hits above or below the top of the bridge it is indicative of a past or present neck problem. Don't buy that guitar.

You can ask an on-line seller about the line of sight down the neck, and for action and saddle height measurements, but in much of my experience, they either claim they don't understand or just avoid your questions. In either case, don't buy that guitar.

If you are unsure of what you are purchasing, I recommend that you take along a friend who knows a bit about acoustic guitars and examine the guitar in person.

It terms of guitar prices, $800 to $1000 is not especially high, but even so, you do not want to spend that kind of money and end up with something that will need another $400 or so of work to make it playable with proper intonation.

Welcome and I too like your sig.

I can't help you choose a model - you have good advice already - but I will reinforce the idea that folks here will help if you ask. That might ease your concerns about going used. Post a listing and we will scrutinize the pictures and feed you questions to ask. Let us know where and maybe someone can go play it on your behalf. There is an unwritten rule that says that LTGer don't steal bargains out from each other's noses so it is pretty safe to post something for discussion in the member's area.

I will gladly attest to that; member Evenkeel, (thanks again,J,) went out of his way to check out my D40 in Florida when it was still in the hands of the infidel. He thoroughly inspected it, babystepped the seller through the Paypal process, and shipped it to me here on Vashon Island. It was a great bargain, and he could have easily snagged it out from under me, but there is true integrity in this community. My D40 and I are testament to that.

Wow thanks a lot for all of the replies and so much help!! I have been fairly busy in the last few days so I haven't had the time of day to check my own thread out!!

I do not have the money right at this moment to buy my new acoustic but after a week or two of work I should be able to so yes Taabru you can chase it haha.

To some previous replies earlier the kind of acoustic I am looking for is a nice balanced tone. The kind of stuff I listen to is beatles, david bowie, nick drake, bob dylan kind of stuff. So mostly chording but I fingerpick fairly often as well.

And I regret to say but I am not near the Rhode Island area, I am from South Dakota. A nice enough place but not much around here.

I would just like to say a big thanks to all of you! All this advice is great and I have never encountered such an amiable disposition over the internet that helped me so much! I will keep searching the internet and the buying/selling section of this website while my money slowly but surely trickles into my wallet haha. I'll keep you all updated!!

Good luck NWM and keep us posted.

Coastie.

BTW. Since you say there isn't much action in South Dakota, you may care to contact our UK president JerryR.

He has for sale, a collection of pneumatic, anatomically-correct "babes". Some are rather sophisticated, and will moo or baaa when required.

NowhereMan,

Use this link for a national Craigslist/eBay/kijiji mash-up search engine. It's how I stay on top of the Guilds that are out there. Helps feed the habit!

Would this be a decent pick? I would be able to try it out because I am making a trip up to St. Paul later this week but what concerns me is the cracks the seller noted by the soundhole and the fretboard. If they aren't too big would it be fine? Ot should I skip this guitar? Thanks! :D

In my opinion it seems a little pricey. If you are in the area, I would check it out. If the neck is straight and there is plenty of saddle and the frets are good, then it may be worth considering. Also check for actual body cracks (i.e. cracks in the wood) and they will lower the value. Check everything and see if there have been other modifications/upgrades/overhauls to the guitar. The Seller may budge in the price. I have a D25 that will eventually need a neck reset in the next few years. When I do, it will have a straight neck with new frets and a bone nut and bone compensated saddle. If I were to sell it at that point, I would ask somewhere between $800-1000 because it would essentially be a brand new guitar. If the guitar of interest shows wear and beaten by age, then that $800 price tag should be negotiable.
