northbayj, I've just gotten into doing the home recording thing for about the last year and a half. I primarily use a Boss BR600 8trk recorder for the little home demos I mess with. The guitar is just plugged straight in, using the built in amp modeling(yukk!).
The backing tracks are whole nother matter. I do those on the PC using several different software programs. I start with BIAB(band in a box) to create the bass/piano/drum parts and to create a midi file. I then import the midi file for each instrument into Tracktion II (mackie program) to mix and master. Once the backing track is done I load into the Boss 8 trk and do the guitar parts. That's it in a nutshell. It's a bit of a hodge-podge deal which is why I don't do more recording!
I've gotten postitive feedback from a lot of folks which is very cool but honestly, I've yet to record anything that doesn't make me cringe when I listen back. It's that self-critic thing and all. I just don't care for the direct, amp modeling guitar tone but I usually record late at night and can't turn the amps on and break out the mics....not without pissing off the wife! I just don't have a good spot in the house to record right now.
Ok, I'm rambling on....Hope that clarifies the recording thing some. Later!
