As for actual muscle memory regarding playing an instrument, I can pick up a violin and still play things I haven't played in 40 years. And I'm talking about lengthy single note pieces like the Brandenburg Concerto's 3rd movement. I know the music, but it's not like I still have the actual notation memorized. I just need a mental jump start and my hands involuntarily take over and do the rest.

I'm always one to stress that if you plan to perform in front of an audience, unless you are at the playing/music theory level to be able to comfortably improvise, and you are performing tunes that currently require your full attention, you should practice them over and over to the point you can still play them while watching tv or having a conversation w/ someone. When they are that easy to you, you'll make it look that easy to the audience, making your performance all the more impressive.

I still wanna talk about Paella, but that's just me.

I've never been able to trust muscle memory to play to the guitar right, that is really sad.

Every few years I play I want you/She's so heavy, the hypnotic part at the end, on and on, and there's been times I couldn't remember how to play it, numerous times in fact.

It's like forgetting multiplications.

You know them, or you did, but may not be able to remember them all without a little refresher if absent for a long time.

Well well well

At least this thread had a VERY POSITIVE outcome here - somehow I started to play my old instrumental songs that are not recorded - also one Peter Lang song - have to search for the name - they all just came back - some right away - some after few errors.

SO - I'd like to say big THANK YOU for @dane for this.

The memory is in the brain. Muscles have no memory, of course.
Of course, everything comes from our brains, but sequences and patterns can indeed be triggered, directly from your brain to your muscles, without you actively thinking about it. Just like if you have ever had a numeric keypad code that you've had to enter countless times. Over time, you might even forget the numeric code altogether. But, if you have a keypad in front of you, the physical sequence your fingers execute tend to magically come out of nowhere. That's muscle memory.

Sadly, all the muscle, mussel, or muesli memory in the world isn't going to make me a good player. I'd have to have been good at some point for the memory to matter. :D
^^^ this right here!! For my memory to allow me to play it well, I'd have to have known how to play it well in the first place for it to be a memory to revive. Sadly.....:rolleyes:
