My favorite changes all the time :D

But a great one is "Souvenirs", in "D", sounds great on a 12 string too. Some of my other faves are "Angel From Montgomery", "Long Monday", "Six O'Clock News", "Christmas In Prison", "Far From Me", "Hello In There", "Fish and Whistle", "Paradise', The Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness"...

I gotta go with "Humidity Built the Snowman" as my current favorite, but "Mexican Home", "Picture Show", "The Other Side Of Town", "Safety Joe" are always right there at the top.

Thanks fellas
I am going to take a stab at The speed of the sound of lonliness...his pickin pattern is going to take a bit of practice since I have been pickin a different pattern all these years...good exercise for my brain and hands.
I'll get around to hearing all the others over the next couple of days ...does he have a greatest hits cd?
Also which album is the best?
Thanks kindly,
Randy

There's a 2-disc John Prine Anthology that pretty much covers it all. I think it's called "Great Days".

Check out the "Prine Shrine" referenced by Pike earlier in this thread, all JP's discography is there.

Hey TT, I forgot to list "Mexican Home" as one of my favorites. The original is really good, but I like the mellower version on John Prine Live even better. And I also learned "The Other Side Of Town", that one is always good for a few laughs along with "Dear Abby" and "Illegal Smile" 8)

And I must say, I was really impressed with his latest album "Fair & Square", what a great effort with a lot of new songs, classic Prine! Still learning "Clay Pigeons" from that album (written by Red Foley I think), what a nice song!

The Live albums are usually my go-to listens when I need a quick fix. Lotsa good, easy to chord songs by John. Great for a learner like me. I'm very excited about my upcoming JP Songbook class.

Wow...this is definitely the place to ask about Prine tunes!
I'll keep an eye out for his Great Days anthology
I was in Nashville once and there was a John Prine Autograph on a guitar hanging up in Gruens Guitars...can't remember what make the guitar was other than a spruce top dread.
Will check out the Prine Shrine too 8) Thanks so much for the song titles...here is the list so far :
Mexican Home
Illegal Smile
Spanish Pipe Dream
The Other Side Of Town
Dear Abby
Clay Pigeons
Humidity Built the Snowman
Picture Show
The Other Side Of Town
Safety Joe
Souvenirs in "D"
Angel From Montgomery
Long Monday
Six O'Clock News
Christmas In Prison
Far From Me
Hello In There
Fish and Whistle
Paradise
The Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness
 Should keep me busy for a while!

Thanks Tony...Great idea...I like how live albums are less polished and unstudiofied (is that a word?)

"Souvenirs" is a good choice. Prine rerecorded many of his best tunes for this album. I'd heard something that he'd lost the rights to the original versions or something like that. Don't know if that's true but this is a good selection of some of Prine's best.

Gosh, not too many that aren't my favorite. As some one else mentioned, my favorite favorites change as time goes by. Sabu Visits the Twin Cities Alone and Ain't Hurtin' Nobody are ones that come to mind right now that are not part of the classic, classic JP songs. Give me a few minutes and I'll have more.

Paradise, for sure, and countless others, but let's not forget.... Great Compromise. Great song with a great message cleverly worked into the lyrics.
Tough call on a favorite from JP, though, especially with Sam Stone, Barbara Lewis Beauregard, Donald and Lydia, and all those Unwed Fathers out there. And I wouldn't want to spend a single Christmas in Prison!
Looks like it's going to be a Long Monday so I'd best get out my Blue Umbrella and say Hello in There.....hello.

Big JP fan here,
Joe

Also, I love Bottomless Lake. To go a different direction, one I really don't like is "Lake Marie". Don't know why, but it just doesn't do it for me. That's about the only one, though.

While we have JP on the line, one of the great things about his music is the range of emotions that run from deeply poignant and profound to downright silly. You in the know, know what I mean.
Think about Hello in There as opposed to Bottomless Lake; Unwed Fathers and Linda Goes to Mars; Souvenirs vs. That's the Way the
World Goes Round (also known as the Happy Enchilada song). Wow!

His take on the world is the stuff of doctoral dissertations, and we just love the heck out of his contributions. At least I know that I do! Plus, they're all exquisitely simple and fun to play and sing! :D

JP fan,
Joe
