I stood on "The Rock" at Slaughterhouse Falls in 2007.
I walked to it last year but with my poor back and other health issues, I chose to just take some pictures on this trip.
Back in 2007, we saw John's, Annie and two other friends walking on the trail going in the opposite direction that we were walking.
It wasn't until we passed them that I realized it was her.
Annie lived just below John's Starwood home, after they divorced.
Their homes were on the hill above the River trail.
That was a fun memory.

It’s probably ‘cause I’m getting old but it’s really heart-warming that JD’s music is still finding fans among young players. That guitar is gorgeous. I hope we do get to hear it played!

Just a note to those JD fans. the river there is not a thing to ignore if you want to duplicate the photo. At times it is under water. Even when exposed, it is generally wet and wet rock is slick rock. The river is also cold and the bottom is rocky. Falling in the water will be "memorable" but not likely enjoyable.... (perhaps an unexpected low to ones planned Rocky Mountain High!). Be safe and have fun.

Getting to Slaughterhouse Falls was fairly easy....go north out of town and turn right on Cemetery Lane. When the road crosses the Roaring Fork River, turn left into a parking lot. Take a right on the rails-to-trails path and go about half a mile. When you reach a small pond on the right, the falls will be slightly behind you.

The climb down to the river is short but very steep and rocky. It isn't just natural rock, it is concrete blocks and rebar, presumably from the old slaughterhouse. It is a scramble to get down there and a scramble to get out. And that is when the rock was dry!

I took the photo using an iPad and a tripod from about where I thought the original photographer was positioned. It was close, but no cigar. I think that in the early '70's the photographer probably used a telephoto lens of some sort on a 35 mm camera and zoomed in on JD from his position on the bank.

Is there a best time of the year to visit this site?
