I broke out the F-112 to work on for a future video and thought it made a good comparison between the middle round bottom F30 body shape (which the F-112 is based on) and the later F30 shape, based on the original flat bottom shape.

I guess the F-112 is the middle years evolution, that then went back to the earlier flat bottomed (makes the rockin’ world go ‘round) shape.

I guess I just don’t understand their thinking. If you’re going to change the body shape, just give it a new model name.

Seriously? That's not the Guild way as any number of other examples will show. But the F30 is the poster child for a Guild model name that doesn't mean the same thing across the decades. I can imagine someone at Guild thinking they could save money by changing the spec but not the name.

:)

In hind sight it might have been cool if they retained the thinner 4” depth F30x and also released a 5” deep version as an F30Dx.

So the waist is smaller in later versions?

That's how I see it.

But then what would they do when they changed the top wood or back shape? :p

I agree about body depth with you, Mikey. Maybe not a whole inch, but even 1/4 or 3/8 inch creates a nicely larger 'cavern' for sound to develop in. The Martin 0-18 is a good example, with an added 1/4 inch of lower bout depth, gives it a different voice than the 00 and 000's 4" depth. I feel those guitars should be built as a standard with the extra depth. In fact, I'm hoping to take delivery soon of my Custom Shop 'deep body' 00-18, ordered nearly a year ago. Can't wait!

I do love my F30, but I believe an extra 1/4" would really round off the tone and volume.

In '93 they actually used "FF" to denote a deep-bodied F5. Always wondered what Gruhn intended to call F30's and '20's after giving us the JF and GF series.

Fat bottom girls you make the rock’s world go round !

I’d love to play a rosewood model , those were in the 70’s right ?

Mine is from 1999. They've made them in different eras.

My 1974 F-30 is a full 5” deep. Deeper than my dreadnought D-35, built a year earlier.
Yeah that’s what I think I seen in the 70’s models but couldn’t remember.

Is yours Mahogany or Rosewood ?
