F20 neck reset question...

I'm doing a neck reset on my '66 F20 and there's something odd going on here.(aside from the fact I'm doing it myself..) Typically the fretboard extends out over the body to the sound hole and sits directly on the top. On this guitar there was a thin mahogany shim glued to the bottom of the rosewood raising the fretboard up. I don't think this has ever had a previous neck reset and was wondering if anyone has seen this before as a factory set up? Without the shim the dovetail won't go down any farther into the body joint...weird.

Is the heel/body area shaded (tinted) darker than the rest of the finish?
It's a typical tell-tale sign of a factory reset, as is a shim (a practice used by some repairmen) to correct fingerboard extension drop-off.

What you're looking at is an original feature of Guild flat tops from that particular era.
I'm familiar with the 'shimming' practice that hideglue is referring to, but that's not what we're dealing with on your F-20. I made a quick shot of the fingerboard extension of a Guild F-30Sb. from that same era that I have and the photo shows the original mahogany shim that has been there from day one.

It's a typical Hoboken feature which ended after the move to Westerly, when they started setting the necks at a much steeper angle.

Thanks Hans. That's exactly what mine looks like. I'll be replacing that shim like before with mahogany or rosewood and that should solve the neck angle issue once the neck is reset.
