A good friend uses a CPAP machine, and is convinced that if the power was to go off through the night, that she would die.

This is especially concerning for her as she often visits her mother who lives in another city where power failures are common.

This got me thinking about and researching emergency electric power supplies.

Ideally a device that plugs into an electrical outlet and so is always fully charged, but only would automatically provide current if there was a power failure,

and has an outlet into which the CPAP machine could be plugged is what I'm looking for.

In other words the power pack is really only an extension cord from the wall outlet to the CPAP until there is a power failure and then is a power source itself.

So far I've not been able to find anything like this, but only emergency generators that are gasoline powered ( so can't even be used indoors).

Just wondering if anyone here knows of such a device (if it even exists)?

Please and thanks.

A 5 sec search for "backup power for CPAP machine"....

^ I would think this would be your cheapest option....and depending on how long of an outage there is, and how long the charge lasts, one could always take it somewhere w/ power during the day to recharge it to get them through the night(s). 🤔 Also would free you up for traveling/camping/etc.

Edit: there are several brands on Amazon in the same price range which are compatible w/ various brands of CPAP machines. Just find out which one they have and I'm sure you'll be able to find one. Most say you can get several nights power out of them if you disable the heat/humidifier functions.

What you’re describing is not a generator but a UPS. Available on Amazon or anywhere computers are sold.

I've recently seen several "portable power stations" (essentially large Li-ion battery banks) hit the market. These seem to be designed for extended "off-grid" camping, and offer solar recharging options. I don't own any (I have a modest portable Generac internal combustion generator), so I have no direct experience.

Here are some examples from Zendure:

An Uninterruptable Power Supply is the solution for computing and networking equipment. It is basically a battery, charger, monitoring equipment and automatic switch.

If you just want a solution buy a system designed for a CPAP machine. If you are comfortable comparing and evaluating specs you may save money by looking at a more generic UPS.

Thanks all for the quick and very helpful replies.
I didn't realize there were dedicated emergency power supplies for CPAP machines, so never thought to even search for them, but instead sought generic power sources, which weren't going to solve the problem.
However the UPS for computer equipment seems to be exactly what my friend would require, and after searching them out, found some examples and retailers here that she can visit and test with her machine. I passed on the information, and hope it solves her problem.
Thanks again.

My BiPap macine is primarily why I bought a generator, although it can power the fridge and the deep freeze too!

I'm definitely going to look into a portable one, thanks. There are many situations where I can't acquire AC power.

A quick search tells that CPAP-apparatus consumes about 30-60W of power.

For about 100-150 USD you can get a UPS-unit from computer store. And that unit will supply power for few hours. They also have audible warning when they switch to battery - so if you do not sleep like a brick - I do 😂 - you'll wake up before it is too late.

Some units have option of turning the alarm OFF in case the power interruptions are known to be short even though common.
