With cars, you can by dyed rubbing compound to bring out certain shades of color in the paint. Is there anything like that for guitars? For example, something to bring out the enerald color and de-emphasize the olive color on old green Guilds. Or make old red mahogany Guilds look darker. Or make red maple look more purple.

Hmm... I wouldn't use stuff like that Darryl unless you're working on a serious beater. To me, using a dye is almost tantamount to doing a refinish.

I think if your goal is to restore the original finish, then a mild rubbing compound like scratch-X or whatever is what you want. That should scrape off the top level of oxidation and leave you with a smooth (original) finish.

Just me talkin', though.

Chaz,

Is it true that removing the oxidized finish on the surface will retard the oxidization of the good finish? That's what they told me back when I was buffing out the dark green hood like this one.

Yes, when I was in high school I had a '56 Bel Air and my chick had a '58 T'Boid. That's right. It's been almost a half century since I was cool.
