Can someone tell me the going price for a nice D-73?

Also, how many were made and how often do you ever see one for sale?

Were the 73's all Grughn era guitars and were they built in Westerley?

Many thanks,

I'm sure West & others will provide more details, but they were made later than the Gruhn era... they were built in Westerly in the mid 90's, '95 I think. They are very rare, I believe only 50 or less were built.

There were around 50 DV73's built, all during the mid 90's....'94-'96 I believe, all built in Westerly, but post Gruhn. The DV72 and DV73 are the same guitar with the exception of the stone used to inlay the neck, rosette and headstock. There were also very limited DV74's, DV76's built, but I've never seen one....seems like the only DV82 built was the prototype. I've also seen a DV72 inlaid in malachite instead of the turquoise they normally used on the 72. Seems like it was marked with a DV72MK designation.

Hey 6....I think the market is a little slow right now, but if you found one in nice shape, then somewheres around 2 grand plus is probably market. You can argue the look if you want, but I think they are very nice sounding dreads.

But then again, we saw a guy here recently try and try again to unload one on eBay for a mere $5000. I think he still has it.

5 grand? You serious? It better be in immaculate condition... with factory strings and packing... as in, never played.

I've got one in new condition that cost me $2000. You can find them, but you gotta keep looking and be patient, and ready to jump when you find one. FNG found one cheaper than that I think, but he's got a knack. His may have needed a little tweaking. John Kidder just found one that a member here helped him acquire. I think John's is played, but very nice. He loves it.

Thanks for the info!

I did see a PERFECT D-73 about a year ago at REAL GUITARS in San Francisco. I fell in love with it at first sight and tried to buy it. Alas, it had already been sold to a person in Europe for $3000 US. Ain't nuthin' looks as cool as a D-73!

That said, I've never even heard of a D-74/76 as mentioned above. Anyone know what they looked like as far as bling goes?

One day I will own a D-73.

You are a lucky man, West.

Between your particular 72 and 73, which one do you prefer? Are there supposed to be any differences in the 2 besides the cosmetic appointments?

Man, you put me in a tight spot here  . But that's ok, obviously I love them both.....I love them all. Looks, the 73......just a drop dead gorgeous guitar. They sound so very similar. The DV72 just has something different. First of all, even though they are the same guitar, the DV72 is lighter, I can't prove it, but I know it. The action is about the same height on both, but the DV72 just plays like butter.....it makes you a better player. I fumble around with other guitars, but it's just simple to play.

Playablility.....the DV72.

Tone............the DV72.

Beauty......... the DV73.

But they're just so close.

The DV72 and I have just bonded, that's all....she's my soul mate.

Yes I am a very lucky man, lucky and very blessed to have a wife that not only located both these guitars for me, but was on the edge of her seat as we made each deal. She also surprised me with a Guild 12 one year....lucky......yep.

dude. that is just awesome. she's quite the catch then!

Yah, but don't tell her I said that, ok? She still thinks she did ok with me   . I took her to an old dilapidated shop in Dallas once to look at a D130. We saw the D130, but she walked over to this other New Old Stock Guild and said, "This one's different" I said "I know Honey, it's a DV72". She said, but it's different....the inlay isn't turquoise, it's malachite". I said "hogwash, it's just a real green turquoise". We read the sticker and it says DV72 MK. We get back home and wrote Hans who confirmed there were several inlaid with different types of stone. My wife has the knack, not a player, but she knows Guilds pretty well....knows her semi-precious stones pretty well too.

If my memory is correct, FNG has a 'burst DV-73, can't be too many of those around!

No, mine is a natural finish. It needed some work, think it had some heat stress at one time. Cracked bridge, and a loose brace, but got it fixed with a bone nut and saddle, good set up, and it is one singing guitar.

I have some pics of a burst -73 on my pic page, that I posted for a guy who was selling it. I think the burst finish is perfect on this guitar.

The DV73 is beautiful in the burst, it picks up the red coral very well. Beautiful guitar. What ever happened to that guitar Effin?
