Hi folks, I have what I feel like will be a cinch question here on this forum. I've attached a photo of a guitar I'm considering purchasing. My question is this: do these pickups look like they are the non Fender made buckers? As in, more than likely these are the Duncan made HB's for Guild? This is a 2000 SF4, made in Westerly.

I read a ton of GAD's extremely helpful information about what to look for in terms of how far apart the two adjustment screws are. So, according to his information, this should be the Duncan made pickups for Guild (seeing that, I'm assuming it's not even possible that it would be an original HB-1, being a 2000 guitar), considering these adjustment screws appear to be farther apart, and not closer together like the Fender made ones. However, the main reason I ask is because I've browsed a few guitars that were a couple years older than this particular guitar, and they had the obvious Fender made humbuckers, according to the two adjustment screws "closeness". How could a Duncan made pickup make it into a guitar built in 2000, when guitars from 97', 98', etc. received the Fender made ones? Is this possible and I'm just not familiar with how things went in their factory? Or, despite the farther apart adjustment screws on the photo of the guitar attached, could this still be Fender made pickups?

It's not a complete deal breaker, but if I do acquire the guitar I'd much prefer that it doesn't have the Fender made pups.

On a completely separate issue, I also notice there is a tiny bit of "space" between the top of the neck pickup ring and the bottom of the neck/fret board. I notice most pics, such as GAD's on his reviews, do NOT have this space and the pickup ring butts right up to the bottom of the fret board. I do see where some Starfires also have this gap, but it seems like all the 2000's would be consistent with this?? Lots of questions!!

Anyway, thank you in advance, and I look forward to reading replies. Cheers!

They look like SD1s. I doubt that guitar is from 2000, but I've been wrong before. My 1998 has that space:

A pic from the side would help. If the body is thinner then it's a ~98.

I have the SN. Is okay to post the SN on this forum?? This would be a sight unseen transaction, so I don't have the ability to photograph it myself. I'm glad you mention this, because one of the reasons I'm interested in pulling the trigger on this guitar is because according to some of the things you've written, and things I've read on other threads, the 2000's are a slightly wider and chunkier neck profile. I definitely prefer the more chunky and wider necks.

Welcome to LTG!
A 98 serial number would be somewhere around 09xx and 11xx as a rough number range, a 2000 more in the 14xx-15xx range. (just to give a rough idea)

EDIT: According to the serial number your potential future guitar is clearly a 1998 made one! Looks extremely nice!

Pretty sure this is the SN: AG001074, but I've also attached a pic.

Serial number puts it around 1998 and those necks, in general, are comfortable, but not chunky.

Oh man! What a conundrum! Because there's another one I have my eye on that is a 2000. It does have the Fender pups, the guy confirmed for me. It's also in excellent condition, and does have more of the aged look in the natural finish, just like your 2000. And I like the idea of the slightly thicker body. I'm a pretty big guy and I really like the "larger the neck, the better", and the thicker body, for me personally. I love Gibsons and own several, so maybe I'll be one of those people that ends up digging the Fender pickups. And I guess if I don't I can put something else in the 2000, as your review indicates those are the ones where you can swap other standard humbucker sized pickups in. I hope I followed that correctly. Well I have some things to think about now. Thank you very much for everyone's input and helpful information.

FWIW I have almost 100 guitars and the 2000 SF4 is one I'll never sell. That's partly because it was the first Guild I got when I started collecting, but everything about it is just wonderful - except for the original pickups.

The '98 is easily as well built and is a fabulous guitar, but it doesn't "do it" for me like the 2000 does.

My gut tells me I'll prefer and bond with the 2000 better as well. And the pickguard location on the 98' would actually bug the you know what out of me. At least that's how I envision it. The good thing is that, if I do get the 2000, dig it big time, but can't get on with the pickups, then I actually don't mind a Guild with plain chrome or nickel covered pickups. I would draw the line at exposed/uncovered humbuckers for a classic instrument like a Guild Starfire. I wouldn't do that. But I'd be perfectly okay with a generic looking covered pickup that had the sound I love. I realize that's probably not a popular opinion here!! If I end up getting it, I'll post pics. But there is also yet another Gibson that is in the hunt as well. I at least get to play it in person first before deciding on that one. If I don't get it, then I'm probably going to make a play for the 2000 SF.
