Any opinions? Were the reissues only DE 500s, no DE 400s (the plainer Duaner)? I'm guessing the reissues must be more prized because I never seem them for sale.

Hi Darryl,

I met one guy with a reissue DE500. I also lucked out years ago and picked up a like new case left over from a reissue DE.

One reason you don't see these for sale is that very few were made. In review of the Guild SN charts it looks like only 41 were sold between 1965 and 1969 (i.e., SN EI101 to EI141). The DE500 shows up again between 1984 and 1986. The SN are AG100148 to AG100169. I am not sure if this count started a zero, 100 or continues in count from the earlier models sold. Hopefully Hans can help ous out here.

In any event these are rare by all standards. If I recall the story of the reissues is that the guitars were finished off from builds started in the 1960's and they came with left over NOS Dearmond 200's.

The sunburst DE500 like the one Neil Young owned woud bring a good price weather made in the 1960's or finished off in the 1980's.

Mat,

I had no idea that the original 500s are about as rare as reissue 500s. But I do know that any Duaner with original dynasonics is rare. I can't recall ever seeing one for sale. I'd like to get one, but of course the price would be prohibitive.

Hey Darryl,

The Reissue was only done in the DE-500 format and those are about as rare as originals from the '60s with DeArmond pickups. At this point I would think the originals bring a little more money but the reissues I see for sale are slowly creeping up in price.

Hi Mike,

That's not correct! The Reissue DE-500s were completely new instruments; only the DeArmonds were leftover from 'the old days'.

Sincerely,

Thanks Hans for the correction. The guy I met with the reissue indicated the DE's were leftovers. I stand corrected. I certaintly do not want to spread incorrect info.
