My 1991 JF-55 has a 1 3/4" nut.
It also has a very nice low profile neck, so it doesn't feel big or chunky, like my Martin does.
The Martin has a 1 11/16" nut.

cjd-

is that 38mm center to center of strings? with Meds that bottom E string is a fattie...a mm all by itself.

i'm interested in trying this, that lil bit of spacing really helps, I think.

Yes, 38mm E to E, center to center.

Yes, that spacing change made a big difference to me. Very close the 1-3/4 nut spacing on my Taylors.

For me, it made the D-55 easier to play. I don't exactly have the most svelt fingers for freatboard manuvering.

cjd, you did well to get that 38 mm spacing to fit your D-55. i just checked 3 guitars - one, my DV-4 with 1 11/16" nut, as well as 2 with 1 3/4" nuts. I had had my tech fill-in, then recut the nut on my DV-4 for for wider spacing and it came out with 37.5 mm centers of E to E, which feels just fine for me. Interestingly, both of my others came with the exact same string spacing on wider nuts! I'd have assumed they'd have been wider before actually measuring.

Looking at those fingers, you might consider something like, say, third base?

That looks like BB King's fingers (or maybe John Lee Hooker's)....

Thanks for the clarification of center to center.
