On page 33 of the Moust book, Hans says that in 1977 Guild started using Dimarzio PAFs and Super Distortions. In the 1980s, which Dimarzios did Guild use? The ones in the Moust book have two yellow bobbins, but I've seen 80s Guilds with pups (Dimarzios?) that have uncovered black bobbins. For example:

And did Social Distortion use Super Distortions?

I think Guild used both the yellow bobbin and black bobbin PUPs in the early 1980 and then transitioned to the black bobbins mid to late 1980's. The black bobbin PUPs are XR7s. They have greater distortion when compared to the yellow bobbin PuPs. When you look at the back of the black PUPs you can see where Guild took a end-mil and machined away the Dimarizio stamped name.

I have been really tempted to pick up a 1980s Starfire that came stock without a pickguard and with the XR7s.

Mat,

I played an 80s starfire 4 with black, uncovered buckers. The bridge was astonishingly bright.

I don't know what brand or type the buckers were. Could they have been Dimarzio PAFS or Super Distortions? I've heard that the Super Distortions rate about 13 ohms, and the XR7 about 8.

As I understand it, when Guild used Dimarzios they put a PAF in the neck and a Super Distortion in the bridge. Were the XR-7 pups all the same, or was there one for the neck and one for the bridge?
