Hi All,

I have a Guild GAD-30R that is a few years old. It came with Grover Sta-Tite open back tuners. Does anyone know if the tuners it came with are 18:1 or 14:1?

Thanks,

Jim

Since they are open back tuners just count the number of teeth on the large sprocket. If there are 18 teeth then they will be 18:1, if there are 14 teeth they will be 14:1. That is the easiest way to find out. Hope that helps!

Thanks. It came with 14:1.

I am debating changing them to 18:1 to make tuning a bit easier.

What tuning difficulties are you having? I have a GAD30R with the 14"1 uners, and haven't had any tuning issues.

I only have open tuners on my Taylor with the slotted headstock. Not sure what the ratio is (I haven't been high enough to count the teeth in the main gear) but when they get a little vague I just adjust the .... well, the ADJUSTMENT screw and it tightens right up and they start tuning right again. Do you have an adjustment screw or one on the end of the knob? That usually works..... :encouragement:

I just find myself going past proper tuning, then having to back up and start again. 18:1 will give me a little more ability to fine tune. There is nothing wrong with the guitar staying in tune .... just my ability to tune it.

I can get by with 14:1s, but there's too always some play in them I find.

I prefer 18:1s. Wilkinson makes a 19:1 (which are modeled after Grovers in appearance) and Gotoh Delta 510s are 21:1. Some people don't like the Gotohs because they don't have the traditional look. I have a set on one of my guitars and they sure do make fine-tuning a breeze! No play whatever; no tuning flat and then bringing the note up to pitch. A pleasure.

If you own a smartphone, either Android or iOS, Peterson makes a tuning app avialable. The app is basically a software equivalent of their strobe tuner hardware. It is good in that it not onlu is very accurate, but also allows you to see when you are getting close by the strobe display slowing down (the further you are away from being in tune, the faster the display scrolls by, the closer you get, the slower it gets). You also get a cents display (and no, you will not get it to stay at zero cents, just try to get it within 5 cents). It also responds very quickly to any change in tuning, so it will allow you to see the changes as they happen, allowing you to stop when you are tuned properly without delay.

App is called iStrobosoft.
