Saw them back in the day. Not really my style of music, but damn he had/still has one heck of a set of lungs.

Holy crap 73? They were my favorite right up until this album. I suppose that's why I was so easily enamored of the entire schamltz-rock era. :)

The Grand Illusion got a lot of play for me! "Come Sail Away" is epic!

Is he still estranged from the members of Styx?

I think that article is glossing over the issues a bit.

From what I recall, Dennis DeYoung wanted to make Styx into a sort of Broadway/Rock crossover which you can absolutely hear in Paradise Theater and Mr. Roboto. I saw them in the '90s just after the bassist died (our show got cancelled and rescheduled because of that) and they were fantastic.

What none of them seem to be able to comprehend is that, like many successful bands, they had their own sound and that sound was a result of the confluence of different styles. The Broadway-esque stylings of Dennis coupled with the rock and harder rock styles of Tommy and JY were just magic, but when they went too far in either direction it tended to get weird or just bad.
