Hi Hans,

I picked up a late 1960's red DE400 with mini humbuckers. I really like this guitar. After seeing Feist playing her SF5 with mini PUPs the mini's PUPs have got my interest. However, I am curious to know if it is a straight swap of vintage Dearmonds with the mini HB's is possible.

Tnx,
M

Hello Mike,

No, a straight swap is not possible. The small Guild humbuckers are mounted differently from vintage DeArmonds. However, the mounting rings used for the small humbuckers have a slightly bigger footprint so if you're sort of a handyman, you could fabricate some sort of 'cover up' rings in which you could mount the DeArmonds. Actually, that's what Guild did on some instruments during the late '60s.

The only problem could be the height of the DeArmonds. If you have a DE-400 with a 'shallow' neck angle, you won't be able to get the DeArmonds under the strings. Also the depth of the original mini-humbucker routings might not be deep enough for the long 'pole piece adjustment screws' that stick out from the bottom of the DeArmonds.

If you take the small humbuckers off of your DE-400 and you have some DeArmonds on hand, you should be able to measure if a pickup swap would be possible, without changing the integrity of the instrument.

Good luck!

Depending on the guitar's neck angle, you could probably fit DeArmonds, but I'm pretty sure they're not a straight swap, and drilling some new holes would be involved.

Thanks Hans and Walter. I'll have to pull off the mini HB this weekend to see what I would be up against if I considered a change to model 200 Dearmonds.

Hey matsickma,
If you remember, I dealt with this same issue when looking at a swapout from mini HBs to the Dynasonic reissues on my Starfire III. You were helping me identify differences in the many Dearmond versions.

The PU rings on the mini HBs are (7/64 in) longer and (1/16 in) thinner than the Dynasonic plastic risers. The riser and pickup should cover the main hole left by the mini HB, but the holes left by the mini HB mounting rings will be slightly visible on the ends. Screwing in the Dearmonds will also be a problem, as there will be little wood in which to drill holes. I've been contemplating how to solve this as well. At first I thought the most elegant solution would be to make new plastic risers with the same dimensions as the mini HBs to perfectly match up screw holes on the top. However, the screw holes to attach the Dynasonic PU to the riser will overlap with the screw holes to mount the riser to the top--they're that close.

Instead, I'm considering making (2) new risers per pickup the same size as the mini HB rings (but same thickness as originals), but I'll drill holes in the same place as the on the original risers. If I place one riser inside under the top and one above, I can screw in the PUs from the top and use both risers to clamp the whole assembly in place. The top riser will cover the original holes, and since the minis and Dearmonds are so close in size, the Dearmonds won't look weird on a mini HB-size riser. Might be also be good to glue nuts to the inside risers on the side facing the back of the guitar. That way the original setup is preserved, and I can still switch back to the mini HBs if I want. Does this make sense? :?

As far as pickup height is concerned, I was okay as long as the neck pickup (actually the chrome housing) is shorter (3/8 in) than the bridge pickup (5/8 in).

Love to hear if you come up with a better solution.

Fellers,

This topic is important because if this mod could be done well, a lot of minibucks would get replaced with dynasonics.

Please keep this info going, and please post some pics.

Sure thing, Darryl! I'm in the process for looking for the right plastic for the rings. Hopefully going to a place this week.

Thanks for the links, Darryl, but in order to pull off the mod above, I'll have to cut custom PU risers. I'm just going to try to get a plastic similar to the Dearmond PU risers I have. I think it's just nylon. I'll ask the plastics people to make sure it's something non-reactive to nitrocellulose lacquer.
