Someone had posted a while back about how you date a Guild. While they list the range of serial numbers on the Guild website I found a stamped date on the neck block inside my D-15. It reads, AUG 18 1983.

Did they stamp all the guitars?

I think stamping dates and/or serial numbers on the neck block was a regular practice, but it was discontinued at some point. My DCE1 does not have a date on the neck block so apparently they stopped sometime before or during 2001.

Hans keeps a database and tracks changes by serial number so he - again - would be the one to know and give more specific info. If your git is from 1983 then it was made during the time period Hans is currently researching for the second volume of "the Bible."

Oh yeah, that too: Welcome! ;)

If you're new and don't already know what I mean by "the Bible," click here.

Either way, welcome to the crew waiting for volume 2! ;)

Hello trainman9,

Welcome! The serial number list on the Guild website is sort of OK for general dating of Guild guitars. However, there are many mistakes and omissions and depending on the guitar you're researching, you do not always get the correct information.
I'm currently working on Part II of The Guild Guitar Book, that will have a completely updated serial number list.

As far as the stamped date on the neck block is concerned: That is not the manufacturing date of the guitar. It's the date that the rim was completed in the 'body shop'. The final manufacturing date is later than that. How much later depends on the model and how popular it was during that period.
Since the date in your guitar is Aug. 18, 1983 you must have a fairly low serial number, ......... right?

Sincerely,

Hans Moust
