damn...............................damn. Forgive the language but I need input from someone who knows more about this than do I. Which is anybody who reads this. I'm adjusting 2K pickups on a just acquired M77T. Placed 2 shims under the bridge pu but needed one more. Placed 3rd shim under the pickup and oui la. 99% of the sound from that pickup is gone. Still something coming through but it's like voluum turned to .5. Neck pickup fine. I printed the wiring diagram from the DeArmond site looked for shorts etc no help. Pot? switch? any guesses?

You pulled the third shim out and the output is still down? It's possible that maybe you have a small break in the wiring to the pup. I've heard a number of people suggest that a pot/wiring/switch upgrade is a good thing.

guitarslinger, if you could throw an M77T into the title, maybe we can keep the riffraff out. ( at Carl)
The wire is cheesy on these, I'm thinking break in the wire.

Re: Damn... damn... damn... damn... damn......M77

For a keeper I will go CTS, Switchcraft and PIO caps. I just wanted to play this one this weekend to see if it loves me or not. I have an M75 that is a project guitar. I pulled the switch from that and tried it with no change. Not the output jack or both pickups would be effected. So I'm changing the pot right now. Pickup? I hope not. In the meantime I'm humming one of Jerry's songs as I curse life. Or, maybe that's the name of the song. Thanks for input, more later.

Be aware that when you put a new selector switch in, it'll ground the signal out against the conductive paint. Not that you don't know that, but anyone reading this post who hasn't, will know now. Put a some cardboard in as an insulator to prevent that from happening.

I didn't know that about the paint. I'm a newbie when it comes to electrical stuff even though it's been a long time since I've been a newbie at anything. I'll check for contact everywhere.

No broken or loose wires to pickup. Nothing making contact with conductive paint.

Can you rig it up so the bridge pickup by passes all the wiring, pots, ets? Temporarly install a JACK directly to the pickup and run it into the back access cavity. This will allow you to isolate it directly to the pickup.

Also did you examine the back of the 2K and confirm that the little wires running into the pickup did not break off of the solded post?

I pulled the pickup and as best these tired eyes can see I found no disconnect. I held the wires to the jack and again no difference. Odd to me that sound comes through the amp but at a diminished, to the point of useless, level. Coils in these are well protected. The wire to the pu is pretty crappy. So...?
My usual amp guy turns out have been an authorized repairman for DeArmond electronics here in town. I'll have him check the pickup this week. Frustrating as hell so... arrrgh! indeed.

DeArmond tech says open circuirt, so, either bad coil or loose connection or... Couldn't say more without MONEY.
I understand Fralin will rewind these. Anybody know of anyone else if that's what it needs.

Where are you located? If you're in NW NJ by some chance, I might be able to visit and help you out.

Very kind offer that. I'm in central California so unless you catch the lights all green it's quite a commute. I pulled the pickup and will take it to the shop one more time to make absolutely positively sure that it's the pickup and not something else. I've found several guys willing to rewind so it's a matter of time and money now. I got the guitar for a very good price so a little money spent is OK... hell no it isn't. As usual the response here has been really helpful and very much appreciated. Updates later.

GuitarSlinger:

As one recommendation regarding a rewind of the pickups, Jason Lollar does pickup rewinding, and very, very well. I had him rewind one of the funny flat pickups from a Harmony Stratotone (Dearmond, I think, but not the ones with the foil on top) and he did an excellent job. Reasonable turn around time as well.

A 2k are relativly easy to find in the $50 range so maybe just keep an eye on ebay. Are your pickups the white or black models?
