I am a newbie at this Guild History Stuff, but, Don, when I saw your post I thought that I had read something about D-40's and D-50's and 12 Strings before.

Guild G212
If you're among the thousands who have played the Guild D-40, you'll be meeting an old friend in the G-212. This 12-string is built on a D-40 body - the same fine woods in the familiar dreadnaught shape and size that make the D-40 sound so full. Superb Guild craftsmanship througout.

Guild G312
Guild's D-50 body is available in a 12-string instrument that gives you all the natual power you would expect of its dreadnought shape and fine, mellowed woods. The entire acoustic spectrum is at your fingertips - particularly when you expore the inventive tuning possibilities that this 12-string suggests.

And that's my 2 cents,

Indeed Frett! I was aware of these models and their parentage. What I've never seen is a Guild labeled D40-12 as this one is.

Hans! You would know if anyone does. Care to weigh in?

Don, I guess two great minds think alike (at least about Guild Guitars).

D40 Spruce Top; Mohogany Back & Sides & Neck; Rosewood Fretboard and Bridge
1 11/16" Nut (1/16" shorter than G212) ; 20 Frets; 5" Depth; 15 3/4 " Lower Bout; 25 5/8" Scale Length

It will be interesting to hear what Hans has to say.

Saw this on eBay. Never knew there was such a thing as a D40-12. Not listed in the Blue Book either. Anyone want to weigh in with some history? I saw listings for D25-12s and D50-12s but no D40-12.

Hello Don,

During the mid-'60s Guild only made 12-string guitars with the F-style body shape but every once in a while they would get a request to build a 'special order' 12-string with the dreadnought body shape. The instruments that were made were based on the D-40 and the D-50 and consequently they were labeled D40-12 and D50-12. After having made several of these instruments during the second half of the '60s and early '70s it was decided to add both models to the regular Guild line.
For some unknown reason (unknown to me that is!) the 'new' models did get the G-model name, just like the G-37 that had been introduced a little before that, and starting in 1974 they were listed as the G-212 and the G-312 respectively.

The D25-12 and D50-12 listings that you've seen are the names for existing models that were renamed during 1987 when many other models did get a 'new' model designation as well.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Ah! Now I understand, thanks Hans! So, just to muddy the waters further, how do the D212 and D312 fit into this framework?

The D212 was the name that was given to the 12-string version of the D-25 during the early '80s. The D312 was the short-lived name that was used for the G-312 during the mid-'80s and which was changed to D50-12 some time after that.

Sincerely,
