I've run across a used 1996 D4-NT-HR in very good condition at a local guitar store. I love how it plays and sounds. I currently have a GAD-JF30 blonde jumbo but the body is so big that when I play for an hour or so my right arm gets numb and it's uncomfortable. I've decided I need a smaller guitar due to my size. I don't find much on this D4 on the internet and thought I might get some opinions here. Is this a good quality guitar and is it worth $900. It has a very nice hardshelll case with it.

thanks for your help, Sarah

I think they tend to be closer to the $500 range. Which is what I was looking to spend on an acoustic. Hence my search for a D4 (or D25, as they are the same). Ended up with a DCE1 which is basically the same with a cutaway and Fishman.

Here's one example.

I paid $400 for mine with a stabilized crack in the top. It also has an after market UST installed. I would say both would affect the value, but probably not $500. For what it's worth, I also got an OHSC. I'm not the most adept analyst of acoustic Guild prices (or much of anything else about them), this is only my experience.

Sarah,
$900.00 is too high. Although very nice, it is definitely not the same as a D25 archback... I've owned both. The D25 has a deeper, boomier response. In mint condition, $600.00 tops IMO...

With regard to construction and materials, the D4 and the D25 are the same guitar. The difference between the two is cosmetics.

That aside, I semi-recently picked up Westerly DV4 in excellent condition for $400. I'd say even $500 is a bit high for D4, unless it was near mint condition. $900 is just offensive.

Thanks,

Chris

I thought that the D4 had solid mahogany sides, whereas the D25 had laminated mahogany . . . does anyone know for certain?

D25s with the arched back have a laminated mahogany back, solid sides and top. Flat back D25s, D4, DV4, etc. are all solid.

The arch backs were made with 3 layers of mahogany to aid forming the back.

I have to agree that at $900 it is grossly overpriced. That's just way out of touch with current market trends/values.

The D4 is a very good guitar, but you should easily be able to find one in the $500 range.

I bought my near mint D4 in August 2007 for 400.00. Sold it a year later for 500.00; still near mint condition. Bought the D25 archback for 550.00 and sold it for 580.00, but had a full setup in it. Also had a Corona D25 (my first Guild) which is similar to the D4. Bought it for 450.00 mint condition and sold for 450.00 same condition...

The braced D25 and D4 have much in common, but the D25 archback has a cult following on this site. Unreal performer; typically listed on eBay between 450 and 700.00.

The Bluebook of acoustic guitars (10th edition) lists the D4 in excellent condition at 550 - 625. The D25 archback lists for 675 - 775 in excellent condition...

I just sole that exact guitar to which I had added a Martin thin-line pickup for $550. $900 is too much. I have to say that I loved that D-4. The tone and action were great. If it would've had a cut-away it would have been perfect. I sold the D-4, bought an F-4 (liked the cut-away and action, missed the dreadnought tone), sold the F-4 and got a GAD50CE which I love. Has the same great tone and action as the D-4 with a cut-away.

Good Luck

Update: Well, after looking at a lot of D4's for sale on eBay and Craigslist everyone was certainly right that the price was too high. When I told him there was one on eBay for buy it now price of $375, he got offended. Anyway, I took the D4 back to him. I did very much enjoy playing it, however. He gave me a store credit of $750 toward anything else I would like. I'll just wait for something spiffy to come in.

I really do love Guild acoustics. So, I would be interested in suggestions of very nice sounding models for $1,000 or less. I prefer used over new.

I don't think you'll go wrong with a D4 and there are certainly plenty of them floating around. Also look for the D25 as I'm pretty sure I saw a thread here about them being the same guitar (with different finishes, I believe). These models are basically what I had in mind for a beater acoustic in the $500 range. I ended up getting a DCE1, which is the same model with a cutaway and a Fishman, and after a good setup and some fret work I'm diggin' it. Danerectal has good things to say about his recently acquired D4 too. Heck, for the money you're willing to spend you could get two of those!

There are definitely other options for under $1k so take your time. You're sure to find a great Guild for the money. It always seems to work out that way. ;)

If you're constrained by the store credit thing and nothing comes in that you're interested in, maybe you can find someone you know who is looking to buy something at that shop and you can let them use your store credit and they can give you cash. Just a thought.

Oh, by the way - someone will be along with better advice. And I just realized I have repeated statements from earlier in this thread. Back to the Solid Body forum for me!
