Hi -

I'm looking at a D-15M which the buyer says has a spruce top. Most of what I find on the internet seems to indicate that the D-15M has a mahogany top.
So now I'm confused. Are they all 'hog topped, or is there a spruce topped version?
Is the D-15M 'hog and the D-15 spruce?

Thanks

Dan,
dazed and confused in Philly

If there is an M in it, that should stand for hog top. Do you have a pic?

The D25M, on the other hand, has a mahogany-stained spruce top.

I've had two of those beauties and would like to have the first one back, simply because it might be the best guitar I've owned, for a number of reasons. :tranquillity:

The D15, D16, and D17 models were built in Westerly and had arch backs. They were built as the solid hog variation on the D25. The D25 model has morphed building specs from Solid Hog Flat Back in the '60's and early '70's. To Spruce Top, Hog B/S with laminate arch back from the early '70s to the time that Guild left Westerly. (Some Solid Hog arch back D25s can be found in '71, '72, '73 Westerly's during the models transition period.) As Joe said, confusion between Mahogany and Spruce Tops usually occurs on the D25M models, because they started with Hog Tops and changed to Spruce. They used a dark red stain on the spruce tops (See Joe's pic above) and so some get confused by the stain color and the letter "M". (As I mentioned adding to the D25M confusion some early models from '71-'73 do have hog tops because you could request a hog top during that time period. So, there are a few D25M Hog Tops out there. But primarily after 1973 the letter "M" after the model # D25 referenced the stain color not wood top.) When Guild moved production to Corona CA 2000-2003 they changed the specs of the D25M back to the original flat back solid hog version. Enough rambling, back to your original question. If the seller is reading the model number correctly on the label, and it is a D15M. The guitar is a Solid Mahogany Top, Solid Mahogany Sides, and Laminate Mahogany arched back. They made them in natural and cherry red finishes. The D15 model was primarily done in a flat finish, without binding, rose wood fret board and bridge, tortoise pick guard. Good Luck with your purchase.

I ended up with a much-mojo'ed 1981 D-25 for close to a song. Here's a picture of it from the Craigslist ad. It's not nearly as red as it appears in the photo. I'll post better pics and details once I get through this blasted snow storm!

Thanks for all the helpful responses!

That would be a D25CH (The "CH" stands for the Cherry Red Stain) I have a D25M 1982 I really love the sound of her. I know that yours will bring you enjoyment to. I recommend that you hunt around for a GOOD luther and have your D25CH set up correctly. Also consider having the plastic Nut and Saddle replaced with bone. Your guitar will play easier and sound better and it will be well worth the investment. Button up your overcoat and enjoy!!
