Yeah, I was thinking not mahogany but I'm not good at eyeballing things like that. This guitar is mid 70s, I believe, and I know Han's book mentions that the factory tried a few different woods prior to '72.

The light grain under the area where the finish is off looks like mahogany to me, Frosty. I don't know what the story is with the darker streaks. I assume the whole thing is hog...

Did you pick this thing up. Was it neck-heavy?

the problem is one of lighting. it's making areas look yellow that may not actually be yellow. it could be figured mahogany the way that's being shot.

Frosty,

That neck just looks abnormal. I've never seen ma hog a knee or paddywhack look like that. Maybe somebody did a weird refin. Or maybe there are disguised repairs.

Hello Frosty,

Happy New Year!

Maybe a little late but I didn't notice this thread when it was originally posted.

Anyway, it's definitely a padouk neck, so I assume the neck in the photo is from the mid-'70s.

Here's an example with a little more wear that shows the same typical grain pattern:

There are quite a few of those in my database. Wouldn't mind adding this one. Do you have the serial number?

Sincerely,

Hans Moust
