I missed an opportunity to pick up a 1975 (ish) D 50 a year or so ago. It had recently had a neck reset and was gone over by Mr Fixit, so was in good structural condition...My recollection is that is did not have much wear either, so in good to very good shape...

I now have my eye on a 1995 (ish) DV 52. It looks to also be in very good shape...

Was wondering what the difference(s) and similarities are between these two models...I suspect the newer one would be a lighter build..But seems both are rosewood with spruce tops, etc...

Any insight is appreciated...

Dave,

The DV series was intended to evoke some sort of "vintage" aspect to the dreadnought line. The appointments are different than the other dreads. Also, I think the bracing might be someone different in terms of placement and in terms of shaving or scalloping, not sure.

Also, in many cases (not all!), the finish was either hand-rubbed or satin, as opposed to full gloss.

There's a lot of love here for DVs (and JVs as well, which are much rarer).

I'm a big fan of D-50s though, personally. Too bad you missed out on the one you were talking about.

Both D-50 and DV-52 would have Sitka spruce tops and solid EI rosewood back and sides, ebony fret board, and ebony bridge. The D-50 would have the older "domed" or "center raised" head stock shape (sometimes AKA the "paddle" head stock). A DV-52 would have the Gruhn-introduced "tapered" or "snakehead" headstock (tho' the DV-52 was introduced AFTER George Gruhn left Guild). Early DV-52s had a "standard" rosette, while later examples (2001-onward?) had pearl-inlaid rosettes. Early on, the DV-52 was made with a satin finish, while its sibling model DV-62 had high gloss finish and herringbone purfling and rosette. IIRC, the DV-52 came with high gloss finish after the DV-62 was discontinued.

I would expect a '75 D-50 to have straight (not shaved or scalloped) braces from the factory. IIRC, the DV-52 would have scalloped braces. I would also expect some differences in the brace/tone bar placement... compare the '76 D-50 with any of the '94/'95 DV models in the 2nd pic from post #9 in my bracing blog... the difference in tone bar placement is most evident on the treble side (right side, in this image). The idea was to give the DV models a "vintage" sound straight from the factory...

I would expect both the '75 D-50 and later DV-52 to tip the scales between 5.5 and 6 lbs.

Sonically, I would expect the '75 D-50 to have the typical booming bass and overtones of EIR, with strong mids and sparkling trebles, lots of volume and projection, and an "in your face" presentation. I really liked the tone of my '76 D-50.

Based on my experience with its more blinged out siblings (DV-72 and DV-73), I would expect a DV-52 to have a somewhat more "refined" tone, again with strong bass and lush overtones... just a little "smoother" or "richer" sounding than the D-50.

There is MUCH love for both models on LTG... the DV-52 has often been referred to as the "best bang for the buck" in a rosewood dread.

Good luck!

Chazmo, Thanks. While I missed out on the one D50, there will always be more to follow...I am looking to get a rosewood Guild for my collection, and not too particular as to model...So just need to try a few out and see what fits...The DV52 is a few hours form me, so just need to figure out when i can test it out...Also, not in a hurry, so can be patient...

Dreadnoughts are great, and there are plenty of them around.

GuardMan, Thanks. I suspect I would like either the D50 or DV 52. To be honest, I do not have the ear that most on this form have, so "Booming Bass" and "refined tone" are over my head...sounds like either will do for me...will try and test bioth out before I pull the trigger...Dave

Yeah, as a big guy I'm with you on going for the jumbo. I'll raise you one and suggest a maple F-50 too - unless you're specifically looking for a rosewood sounding guitar.

Boomstick, I just picked up a JF-30, so all set on maple for now...Looking for rosewood as I also have a few mahogany guitars. Will not rule out a F50r as Chazmo suggested. I actually was looking at a JF50 rosewood about a year ago. Made an offer, but was too low and someone else got it. No worries, as the hunt is fun...

All, Looks like I might pick up the DV52. (pictures) One last question...This one is HG...Would there be much of a difference between the HG and a satin finish? keep in mind, I do not have a "refined" ear like some of you...

The amount (if any) that high gloss will impact the sound vs. satin or hand rubbed is really nothing. It's predominantly a visual thing. Looks nice!

Update...I did pick the DV52 up. Needs a neck reset, so sending to Mr. Fixit...Will post NGD once he gets her back to prime...Overall, it is in very good shape, as there are very little play wear...I suspect neck angle is off as it just sat in case under tension...
