Just as I've managed to put to bed impure thoughts about further guitar and amplifier purchase, along comes CE Blues !

And I'm convinced that I should have a D-25 in my life

I'm sure my questions have been posed, and answered somewhere previously, given the huge D-25 fan base here, but please indulge me.

Firstly, I want a post- '76 D-25.

Are there better periods of D-25 production than others ?

Should I avoid Corona production ?

Were they ever offered in an HR or satin finish ?

Does anybody here have one that he wants to sell ? (If it's Seafoam Green, thank you; but no thank you !)

Has anybody here fitted one with Tusq nut/saddle/bridge pins ?

Thank you people.

Hey Coastie... Howdy to you in Newsyland. Curious as to why you're focussing on a post-'76 D-25? If it's to get the arched back, the switch from flat to arched back occurred around '73. Apparently some '73s were all 'hog with arched back, and then later stained spruce tops with arched backs. I consider my '74 (D-25M with "mahogany" stained spruce top and arched mahogany back) to be a real gem, and a steal at ~$550 off eBay (though others have gotten even lower prices). Cherry (C or CH) and mahogany (M) stained spruce tops seem to be most common on eBay, though I have seen bursts (tend to be younger). I think NTs were also made in later years. Don't know of any in satin or HR (but there were some spin-off models in later years (D-16 or 17?) that might have had the D-25s arched back, but in satin or HR (don't have my books at hand, right now).

I had tusq saddle and pins in my D-25 for a couple months... definitely sounded better than the plastic that came with it. But, switched to bone saddle and bone pins (with tortoise inlays) from Gordon Orth last winter. Don't know if there was much sound change going from tusq to bone, but the Orth pins look a lot nicer than the tusq pins (you can see mine in the link below my sig).

Good luck in your quest!

Impure thoughts, indeed, Coastie! :) Good luck in the hunt. Hopefully Mole and a few of the others with gorgeous examples of the breed will chime in.

Yeah, I'm also curious as to your restrictions... What, in particular, are you thinking about?

Hey GardMan and Chazmo.

My mistake in quoting a '76 D-25. I should know the Spruce/Arched-Back change came along in '73........... I've only just finished talking to Hans about it !!

My interest is explained here, when CE Blues comes along....................

I wondered about Tusq replacement parts because I figure they would probably add a little brightness over plastic. The three acoustics that I have, have all been modified with FWI components, as well as two that I no longer have. Tusq sure ain't pretty, but it may be the most functional alternative in this case.

I'll PM you tomorrow Gary, mine is a '79. I'm not interested in selling, but can offer opinions. Gotta run now. Great to hear you venturing out into dreadland.

Hello coastie,

Change to laminated arched back took place during 1973. Change from mahogany top to spruce top was during 1974.

Coastie,

I have a 1981 D-25C that sounds great. I had a fossilized ivory nut and saddle installed last year, what a difference it made. I would say it made the guitar louder and richer sounding. I have thought about selling just because I just don`t play it as much as I should. You can send me a pm if you are interested.

When did Guild start overbuilding their guitars? Post Gruhn-era some time?

Sitka,
Can't give a definitive answer, but there was a marked difference in build weight between my '72 D-35 and my wife's '78 D-35, which I sold (with her blessing) to help pay for my D-46. The '72 is noticeably lighter than the '78 was, and feels much lighter than all the other Guild Dreads currently in my possession.

Are you requesting a picture post? lol I'm always willing to accomidate a request of my D25CH. The only thing non stock about her is the Schallers which I installed shortly after I bought her in 1978. And, no, she's not for sale. lol
