I always wonder all the switches do on these things

When I saw it - my immediate impression of the pots and switches was.

Three pups - three ON-OFF switches
Two humbuckers - two coil-split switches
One x-tra switch - naturally phase reverse for mid single coil pup.

Master volume not in the "circle"
Three pairs of VOL+TONE in the "circle"

Naturally I might be unimaginativly wrong :sneaky: :sneaky:🐾

No feedback, no other things for sale. I'd say it's some sort of private joke he's playing with somebody, or with himself. 😬

The write-up is entertaining, if not well-written...

Electronics on an Alembic struck me as odd as who really wants to deal with so many controls that can break or be knocked out of the “sweet spot” in a live setting? What me and my friend joke about is how Jerry Garcia played strats, a Les Paul or two, Travis Bean, Alembic, Doug Irwin and god knows what the hell else, expanded his rig into a mission control looking set up yet he sounded exactly the same through out the years of live shows pretty much every night.

To me it looks like plastic wire used to keep the cables together - not very tidy job - especially concidering all the attention of woodworks etc.

You are correct; as I look closer I see it is the good old wax-coated spot tie used to wrap wire bundles.

I feel like Garcia's tone changed quite a lot through the years. My favorite was early 70's with his raw Strat sounds. Much more processed in later years. IMO. I believe he always played through a Fender Twin preamp.

I don’t mean it as a dig at JC because I drove myself absolutely insane trying to cop that sustaining bell like cleans he got. To me when he used twins, elaborate twin pre through SS McIntosh power amps, Mesa Boogie (IIRC a brief period of a year or two.) or whatever else he could have used later on it still sounded like Jerry. If you had me playing his exact rig all I could ever hope for is to be a barely convincing copy.

Unfortunately my attempt at the Garcia cleans was a miserable failure. At one point in time I had an Alembic F-2B clone into a Yamaha SS power amp (maybe the McIntosh power sect is vital and perhaps where I went wrong.) and even though it was a lush clean tone it wasn’t JC’s tone. I even went as far as bastardizing a poor Fernandes strat by wiring it up exactly like the Wolf guitar (or at least what the internet told me was the exact wiring schematic.)
