As you know, sound is something very subjective - though of course there is some kind of consensus what is good and... well, not quite so good. I, the guitarist, may only have a positive idea about my guitars and gear, but that doesn't allow me to critically assess what my tone really sounds like. Simply put I'm biased by what I think I hear when playing my instruments and using my gear. Also the sound I percieve of an instrument facing away from me could be something quite different than what you might hear facing the soundhole.
Sweeter then the compliments by somebody you know well and trust wouldn't tell you what he/ she thinks you'd like to hear, trying to be nice. Sweeter yet if he/ she, though being very gentle by nature, is hard to impress on and therefore usually doesn't give compliments as a custom. That's exactly what happened to me today.
I was at a friend's place recording a demo. I may be the composer behind the song but I've hired him for making the production for me. Percussion, bass and synths emulating synths and symphonic string and wind sections was all in place and what's left was some acoustic guitars. I'm sure he had a bit of fingerpicking here and there in mind but I persuaded him into letting me strum along on my D212, strung with fresh .010 BSs for the occasion, in the chorus and at the end of the song.
Then, in the middle of recording my fingerpicked WP, that one also strung with DMS BS but Lights on this instance, he said "That guitar really sounds great" and elaborating on the subject we talked abit about its monetairy value and the strings on it. Later, before saying our goodbyes, he expressively pointed out how well the D212 blended in with the stringsections in the chorus and the end of the song.
This friend of mine is far more musically experienced than I am and I have described him as Mick Fleetwood and Pat Leonard in one person. He's into intellectual music in a big way and very critical when it comes to sounds and arrangements - in other words he's hard to please musically, but I think I'm halfway there on this, thanx to my musical skills and of course to Guild.
[The moment this song of mine is complete I could post it here if you like. Also I'm making a comparative review of the John Pearse phosphor bronze Light vs. the Dean Markley BlueSteel Light and if it's in line with the guidelines of this forum I thought I might post it here.]
