Hey guys!
Well, I may never ever get my black finish F-412, but I see this up on eBay:

I'd like to hear all your opinions about this guitar, including a comparison between it & the F-412. My feeling is that they're essentially the same instrument. Am I right?

I will await your responses.

Thanks!
Barbara

Hi Barbara; no comment on the comparison but yes, and more or less according to the Blue Book, the F412 went out of the product line about when the JF65-12 went into the product line. Good luck; so sorry again about your Rhode Island Blackie. Cheers! cj

Hi Barb,

I had the pleasure of playing David's (California) JF65-12 in Arlington and let me tell you, this was a sweet guitar.

It's prettier that the ebay one as well, it has abalone around the soundhole. Here's a pic.

That's David on the left, then West and then Hans. You can even see the flame on the sides of the guitar.

Fabulous and yes a 412. You should try smiling real pretty at him and see if he'll part with his. I tried, but all I got was his phone number.

Well, geez! I like that abalone rosette on David's guitar! Why doesn't the one on ebay have it? Was that a feature in other years?

Hey Dan,
Thanks for that link. It's a newer Guild -- post Westerley, I think -- and that might explain the abalone rosette. Or not... :)

So many choices...so much time!

What is the buy it now price?
I didn't see it.
He said only interested persons bid, so it sounds like the last aucton went bad.
It's beautiful guitar, and the seller sounds honest.
I may even bid on it.
No wait, I'm trying to sale a 12 string, not buy one!

Oops -- I thought 1996 was too late for Westerley. Sorry... I'm more up on the Hoboken to Westerley vintage Guilds than the later ones.

So which listing is it you guys think is good? The "Buy It Now" 1996 one or the original one, no reserve, sans abalone? I got mixed up with your replies, my poor brain unable to sort it all out.

Hi again Barbara....
As you know, buying on the bay is always a risk. However, the last two JF65's on the bay went for 1900 and 1600 bucks. In my opinion, 1299 is a great BIN even if it may need a bridge re-glue (common repair on 12-ers, real easy for a good luthier, inexpensive....75 to 125 bucks max). If I was in the market for another 12-er right now, that BIN would be looking mighty tasty.

Hi Barb,

When they switched from "F-412" to "JF-65 12" the only thing that changed was the name. The guitars were absolutely the same. A little later they added abalone rosettes for a while and then switched back.

The eBay listing looks like a very good buy if it is truthfully represented , but I would never bid without a return option.

Good luck,

David

Not sure, could be like the DV-52 as well. Some have the abalone around the soundhole others do not.

Graham's right on the money. The abalone came in around '94 or so. The pricing on both of these is insane -- but not unusual -- considering the cost of a new 412. Things to watch for aesthetically are the figuring in the maple; and if you're going for a Jf-65, many have really cool tiger striping up the neck and pretty precise bookmatching where the side pieces meet at the tailpin. For resale down the line the pattern in the wood can one day be very important. Mark and I just toured the Taylor factory, and we were told that supplies of figured maple are disappearing as the oldest trees are all gone. In Taylor's maple guitars, they're settling for a lot plainer woods. If that is truly the case, watch for increased prices across the board for great flamed and quilted maple guitars, especially jumbos, where it is even harder to get pieces ig enough for the backs.

IMHO, the one that sold visually had a lot more going for it than the one that is still available. They tend to come up a couple of times a month, so start a search and keep your eyes open.

Lot's of folks get confused during those years Barb. Remember, Fender bought Guild in '95, however........the same folks who had worked for Guild, continued on under Fender until 2001. I think some of the best Westerlys came out during those years ('95-'01), based on my own collection and from what I've heard from from employess of the Westerly plant, who have told me that QC became an obsession during that time frame under Fender management. I've played many other beautiful Guild acoustics that came out during that era.
