serial #AU3210025

I just sent a link for a JF30-12 to a buddy. I was trying to find out when it was made & then let him make up his mind. He has played a few Taylors but he will also spend over 2K for one. Taylors may have a easier neck but the Guilds I own sound awesome. I have never played a Taylor myself.

I really am enjoying the one I got from Guildzilla. :)

Jake,

I just went on the Guild web site and their dating chart. Perhaps the serial number is AJ3210025, not A U . . .
There is no listing for AU . .
Anyway, your guitar would be a 1996 model.
Here's the site, in case you want to look it up yourself:

Good luck!

Hello Jake,

Metalman is probably right about the first letters being AJ but you've also given us too many numbers. There should be 6 digits after the AJ prefix, so I would think the number should probably have one zero less. That would still make it a model from 1996.

Sincerely,

8) Thanks Hans. I new you would pop in & help. I just emailed the seller to look at the label & see what the # reads.

Hans, are you still working on your new book? I'm looking forward to getting one if you ever get it out. :D

Happy turkey day to all.

My cousin will date the guitar, but he doesn't kiss on the first date.
Check with JerryR for that.

Ya'll cats cracked me up w/ that joke.

It is a "J" which appeared to look like a "U" to the seller. I also told him about the extra "0" which Hans mentioned.

I'm trying to get get my buddy to maybe buy it since he has played mine.

Glad to hear you are playing and enjoying the JF-30-12, Jake. That's a tough lineup to crack for playing time with your list of guitars. Happy Thanksgiving.

I did it with mine and whsh that I had done it sooner!

I did. :D New bone nut. Needed some fret leveling up high & sounds great. Not hard to play but I do have some hand problems. I wish I had some of those long fingers I see on cats like Lighting Hopkins & some of the other Black cats. I can't use my thumb at all on an acoustic. I was looking at a pic the other night of some Black Bluesman of old :?: . His little finger was longer than my bird finger.

I hear the Taylor necks are a little less meaty. I don't know. Nver played one.

If any one else wants to date my guitar, you will have to have her home by 9 pm & no funny business.

re: the fingers of bluesmen.
Hounddog Taylor was born with 6 on each hand.

Until he cut one off with a knife.

Looking forward to getting mine from fungusyoung next week. What strings are you guys running on your JF30-12s?? I generally use D'Addario PB (either EXP or not) light gauge on my jumbos....

BTW, have any of you compared you JF30-12 to a GAD version? I was not impressed with the one I played in the store. I'm going to have to A/B them when I get mine. The GAD version doesn't have the arched back. I wonder if it's still a laminated maple or whether they've changed to solid (I doubt it).

As far as comparing the new GAD to an older model of the same name, I can tell you from my experience that there is a lot of differences between the two.

I have a '70 F-212, and my friend wants to buy a similar model, so I am helping him, because he really doesn't know the ropes, and he trusts my judgement.

I went into the store and they have a brand new GAD F-212 hanging up there. I pulled it down, and even though it sounds nice, it is not all all like its counterpart from the '70s.

The salesman and I agreeed, that the neck is too small, too narrow, and it was difficult to find separation between the strings.

This guitar is a good candidate for conversion to 10-strings.

But it did sound really nice, and I have to admit, a little better than the Taylor hanging up next to it, and a LOT better than the special order Martin just a few feet away, for a lot more money.

The price was around $871, and for that money, and it is a good value for what you are getting, I personally would go on line and pick up a used one, maybe spend a few more dollars and get a prized, but yet affordable, F-212 or even F-212XL from the '60s or '70s.

At this time there are some really nice 12-strings on Ebay. I am tempted . . .

I agree completely Met'man. The string spacing was the first thing I noticed the first time I test-drove a GAD F-212. It makes both fingerpicking and flatpicking very difficult. I got a recommendation that one could have a new, custom nut and saddle cut for it and probably solve the problem The good sound could be leveraged with better playability and the price would still be kept reasonable. And you'd get one of those very cool cases.

Of course if one plays only rhythm, it might be a very good choice.

Bro,

A set of Elixir Light nanoweb strings, tuned to E flat or D will help any 12 string guitar achieve the comfort play zone.

I have a Guild, a Taylor, and a Washburn 12 string guitar. The Wasburn has Elixir nanoweb lights, removed from the Taylor, and it actually is easier to play than the Taylor in it's current set up. Taylor's 12's have a nice finish on a slightly shaved neck, but they are still a large and robust guitar.
