The mental gymnastics might relate more to member responses than in the mind of someone just looking for information about a Guild he fell in love with, asking in the right place on the Guild forum.
So far responses of "check out the other guitar instead" "overpriced" and "trashed" are all in evidence, now veering towards just play it and buy rather than asking people.
Yes, it can.
Not necessarily color, but finish. Poly is widely accepted to mute guitar over Nitro so we already largely agree that finish affects tone, "the way it sounds".
Guitars with metallic pigment in the paint - like a Silverburst Les Paul or Robbie Robertson's Bronzed Strat - are also accepted to have tonal differences.
Back to the black finish on these old Guilds, it is thin, it crazes easily in ways that regular nitro doesn't on the Nat models, so yeah, it could have a positive effect on tone.
