hey all, i bought this on ebay a couple weeks ago. it came from a music store in vegas. it must have been someones baby for a long time, maybe a custom order? the ebony on the neck is ultra high quality - it sounds fantastic. the seller said it was refinished original color (probably long ago) and tuners replaced.

on the case rubbed out is "R.I.P. Gary Reed or Dowd" or some last name i can't make out.

anyway i feel pretty lucky. any one know where i could get a replacement gold tone knob?

the auction was here (sorry if i beat out a board member):http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380205151351

Well since you're a member now we'll just have to say congratulations! Two observations however: Isn't that a Gibson trussrod cover? And I don't think those diamond shape inlays are original but there's a couple of guys here who'd be able to say for sure I think...Hans? Grot?

I'm no expert, but I do know the diamond inlays are original. That's an S-200, if I remember correctly and they are very rare. I think that one had been on eBay and admired/debated here in previous threads. It's very pretty.

That is a Gibson truss rod cover.

Here's what the original would have looked like:

Also a Gibson (or gibson style) switch tip.

Guild ones are metal and shaped a bit differently:

But neither of those are big deals and both things you can "someday" replace.

The knob is probably going to be hard to find, esp. in gold. From what I understand, since no new Guild electrics are getting made, they're no longer available new, so you have to find one NOS or used somewhere.

Those Sperzels are a lot better than the original tuners. If they were installed at the time of (or prior to) the refin (which would be proven by the absence of old screw holes and impressions from the original tuners, then the refin isn't too old, cause I think Sperzels came out sometime in the 90s.

Adhorski is right, though, Hans and Grot will be able to tell you more about it and I know Grot has one in cherry, plus a few other Guilds  .

So...it was you!

 j/k and...welcome! Nice S-200. And just to echo, replaced tuners, replaced switch tip, replaced TRC, refin and, yes, the inlays are original.

Re: bought a unique s100 1973

hey, thanks all. I've removed the truss rod cover from the inferior G company, and borrowed the switch tip from my nightbird.

The tuner impressions/holes are there from the originals, I'm maybe thinking that the seller was confused between refinished and refretted. I can tell a fret job was done from one spot on the ebony. The finish is worn with a good amount of very light pick wear and a few light dents on the back. Maybe the back was oversprayed? The transition from paint to binding on the neck seems factory perfect.

Anyway s100 or 200 these guitars sound great. ( I kind of like the diamonds and G logo ) Very pure and sustain for days. I like it most through the bf bassman clean enough to let the sound of the instrument out. Very versatile rhythm sounds it really rings. It sounds so good I'll get used to the 1 5/8ths. ( its only 1/16th from 11/16th, right?)

I bought this to replace a more expensive sg custom I have to sell -downsizing- and the guild blows it away...

Seriously nice guitar, dude. Congrats, big time. Never seen an S-200 in the flesh - nice attention to detail there. Love the headstock binding and the ebony board.

These old S series guitars are killer. Welcome to the club.

I normally don't dig black and gold on guitars, but that is a beaut!

Congrats on the score. I'd love to hear some sound clips.
