Today was a philosophical day. Not sure why, but it was. As I was traveling home from a physician's check-up, it occurred to me that "maturing" stinks. Although I got an A+ for physical well-being, it was the receptionist verifying my "date of birth" that sparked me to thinking. I'm a Boomer (actual DOB to be withheld because I'm still vain enough to think it matters)...let's just say, as a young (emphasis on young) kid, I remember watching Bob Keeshan as Clarabell the Clown before he became Captain Kangaroo. :::::geesh::::

Another thing seems to be happening here on LTG these past two weeks - LOTS of posts of RIP for great guitarists and musicians. And, numerous eBay and craigslist.org ads have mentioned "selling Dad's collection (herd)", "left to me by my Uncle", etc.

So, here's the prediction:

As Boomers continue to mature, there will be more and more vintage Guilds available (since most of those who inherit them do not have the slightest idea about or play a guitar......let alone, our precious Guilds). Since Boomers were also the generation that "picked-up the guitar" (en masse) during Guild's golden era, there are numerous ones under beds somewhere....that will be for sale in the next five to seven years.

P.S. Forever Young is my theme song. :)

I probably fit your prediction. Mrs. Fro's response to any interest by me in another bass comes down to "it's just one more thing that the kids will have to sell". And I have to admit she is right. That being the case, assuming we still use the internet and message boards when the time comes, I have suggested to my heirs that they consider selling my basses to folks at LTG.

That assumes that they'll know how to use a computer.
Or that we'll have the mobile device interface up and running.

I loved Claribell! I recently moved my elderly mother closer and among her saved things was my old Claribell puppet! I couldn't believe it... and ol' Claribell's in better shape than I am.

From Wiki:
Buffalo Bob Smith and the Kids of the Peanut Gallery sang a song about Clarabell, sung to the tune of "Mademoiselle from Armentières".

Who's the funniest clown we know? Clarabell!
Who's the clown on Howdy's show? Clarabell!
His feet are big, his tummy's stout,
But we could never do without,
Clara, Clara, Clarabell!

Who has fuzzy-wuzzy hair? Clarabell!
It's partly red but mostly bare. Clarabell!
And since the day that he was born,
He's honked and honked and honked his horn.
Clara, Clara, Clarabell!

I think on this one too, and would add to your prediction. Right now, in this job-less economy, employers act as if they are doing people favors by hiring them. Most managers have worked in a candidate-rich, lean market for so long they take the labor supply for granted. However ... the baby boomers are retiring. As with every other movement of this (relatively) huge generation, that movement will have consequences. At a certain point, 5-7 years down the road, all of sudden, as if by magic, there will be open jobs everywhere. As the huge pool of boomer talent/experience departs, there will be (statistically) a dearth of people with the requisite experierice left to hire. It will be too big a deficit for now smug companies to ignore, so for at least a short time, plenty of work left for those who care to take it.

Hardening of the attitudes......that's what to be on guard for... By the way, I sold my F50 to Ian for that reason, in part....I actually do want to see my Guilds go to younger folks who will continue loving them...I replaced it with a D50 with some cosmetic issues and a couple of repaired cracks, but sounds delicious... I still have my F512 and might pare that out in favor of a simpler 12, but all these other nice Guilds keep showing up so....well its frustrating and I guess I'll just have to stay forever young to take advantage... Steffan

AlohaJoe,

I REALLY like your mom for saving your Clarabell puppet. Moms are special like that. :)

I wonder how many LTGers who read this post have no idea of whom we speak, let alone know the melody to "Mademoiselle from Armentières" :::::teehee:::::

MD,

I agree. The boomers leaving the workforce in the next few years will leave a HUGE vacuum of lost knowledge, skills, and abilities of which I'm sure Gen XYZers (or whatever generation they are called today) cannot fill the bill. The work ethic of the Boomers is not a common element in today's work environment, I fear.

Gosh, on the bright side, they can always hire us back as consultants when things go bad.....at a significantly higher per diem. :)

Thanks, West, for the vid. Great song sung by one of my most favorites, Don Williams.

P.S. I think you sound a bit like Mr. Williams. :)

I'll take that as a real compliment. Thank you Toni.

A Don Williams tune.....not a good recording :? :?:  , or maybe it was the subject matter?

Western One,

I knew you were a good player, but I didn't know you have such an outstanding voice. I know that stardom is a million-to-one shot, but you're as good as many who make it big, and you could at least make a good living as one of those local (and loco) singers who are as good as some of the hitmakers.

BTW, Don Williams was a big influence on Clapton in the late 70s and early 80s.

Years ago, someone sent me a email blurb of quotes. Most were good. But one stood out and I keep it with me always:

"Inside every older person, is a younger person wondering what the F**K happened?"
