I’ve noticed that many members install bone nuts on their acoustic guitars, and feel that is a beneficial mod. Has anyone here done it to an electric? Did you notice a difference? My old Tele is giong into the shop, and I’m wondering...Thanks

What is the existing nut composed of? What year is the Tele?

I’ve had lots of bone nuts on electrics over the years. Couple of metal ones, too.

Metal nut is supposed to increase sustain, pretty surprisingly in acoustics (I've personally heard an example), wouldn't surprise me if it was almost beyond the envelope for some electrics?

Bone nuts are good. Two of my Guilds have them

i would imagine density plays a part. The nut and the saddles are the only contact points of the strings so it’s not surprising to me that they have a huge effect.

Did you notice a difference from the stock nut?

It’s a ‘95, and the nut is stock, plastic, I guess.
I’m just curious if it’s worth doing while the tech has it.
I would. It is fairly inexpensive. Bone is better. I notice a difference in response.

One was in '62 X175, the other is in my 2001 M70 - I think the nut is stock in both cases but the X175 could be a replacement.

Bone is a night and day difference over plastic, on any guitar. Acoustic resonance is just as important on an electric guitar.

I regularly removed brass nuts from vintage Les Paul/SG I was buying and selling some years back, and replaced them with bone for proper looks. People did it to brighten up the instruments, part of an 80's fad for more sustain.
