I know I'm a little late to the party, but I bought one of these new in '96. Actually, two of them. I had a friend who was a dealer here in Mississippi, and he told me there were 4 colors:blueburst, blackburst, redburst and greenburst. I have never actually seen a red or green, so those may just be a legend. But I own a black and a blue, and I can verify that they did indeed come from the factory that way, and the finish was the satin-type finish common on D4's. I don't have these two at my house right now, and I don't have pictures of the labels on my inventory photos, so I can't address the 'HP' designation. As for these being only from a certain distributor, I bought both of mine from 2 different local, independent shops, and I know for a fact that the blue one was ordered directly from Guild in Westerly. If anyone has any further info, especially on the existence of the red and green models, I would love to know.

PSJW,
Any chance you would post some photos of your bursts!

While looking for info on this blue burst, I ran across this info. Mine says D4 BLB AP on the label.. it looks like that anyway, in the same handwriting as the one in this thread. I'll put some pics up. It has the exact same crack on the top, but also has crush breaks on the back side. Like it was crushed in shipping. I bought it this way to do the repairs. It has a great neck, great action. I did glue the breaks on the end, but the top is lifting again.

I just added this info to my FB page. I'm thinking of selling it as a project.

I think we can assume now that the "HP" designation referred to by the OP is actually a sloppy "AP," which seems to stand for Abalone Pearl. if anyone ever finds evidence of the red or green, I would love to know.

A-ha! Can see the label clearly now, and it just hit me: I wonder if it could actually mean "Azure Pearl (or pickguard)" , to distinguish it from the "B for Black" ?
Just guessing again, since abalone typically has elements of red blue AND green, but that p/g appears to be only blue.
Love it.

Al, you could use a new monitor...it is abalone colored...or coloured...depending on which side of the pond you're at.
