Thanks Ralf SF IV, good information...I'm mostly interested in the relationship between woods used for backs & sides, and corresponging 12 strings guitars' tone ; David Gilmour is currently seen doing some promotion for his Martin Custom Signature models (on Martin's Facebook), and after listening to him playing 'Wish you were here' on them, I thought that I liked his recording of it with this Guild better (the new Martin is a D-35 -Martin- lnspired dread with Sinker mahogany back and sides)...Between tonewoods, formats various building techiques used and brands, not so easy find one's way...

Al had told me about Guild 12 strings' tonewoods, but I don't remember thread's title, sorry... (I see there are F-512s maple, and F-412s - maple - humm, tricky one ! :) ).

Thanks Micky too, and to other posrtive imput.

Hi Bernie: Only Oxnard builds will have the "F-512 Maple" designation, as they don't use the "F412" model number. Prior to that, F412's were (archback) maple by definition, and '512's were flat-back rosewood. JF30-12's were also maple archbacks, kind of an economy version of the F412.

Dropping down to 16" jumbo shape, F212's were flatback 'hog, and F312's were flatback rosewood. F212XL was 17" flatback hog.
Now that I think about, I don't think there was a 16" maple bodied 12 until the DD12Mce out of New Hartford:

But coffee hasn't kicked in yet and I feel like I'm forgetting something. :coffee:

Thanks a lot Al; this Doyle Dykes Custom DD-12MCE looks very nice. Thanks for showing it; I'am not myself much into 12 strings playing at the moment, and no expensive guitar's on my list so far, though this looks like quite a bargain...My first 12 strings remains unplayed most of the time (French designed MIC Lag) and there would be a transitional one (likely) before I get smth. really good if ever...Times are difficult for musicians (no playing live is possible, bars, showrooms, theatres, restaurants, pubs, clubs are all closed)...
I got back into 12 strings mostly because of David Gilmour's Martin's models release, after closely examining an interesting Epi's new release (Hummingbird 12) a while back...
Thanks a lot too for rmaking my memory clear(er) with the Guild 12 strings' nomenclatura throughout the years.
Looks like we're not out the pandemic yet here (not even 10% vaccinated I think -one dose-, running out of vaccine too, with a possible 3rd wave coming...). Let's enjoy the good guitars we've got for now, and get ready for later...☺

Thread resurrection! I love when this happens...
So Bernie makes the last post before COVID hit, Dec 2019. and Ralf answers a question in March of 2021. BWAHAHAHAHAHAH
Not exactly me, Bernie was the one restarting it and asking the new question on Thursday this week.

I agree that this Guild with that tasty finish and maple - then - back and sides must be my favourite (standard) 12 strings till now I believe. Probably a bit large for someone my size - I 'm not tall -, but some say that maple backs and sides can be too bright with smaller bodies...
One thing I wonder still, since David Gilmour's 12 strings was a F-412; it had an archback then, right ? Must have been laminated back and sides too...I don't normally bond for long with laminates, not anymore. Strange...

I am a newcomer to the Guild family : I hadn't paid much attention in recent years to who was playing Guild acoustics as I was more after Martins, Taylors or Gibsons at the time, and luthiers' made guitares too... Till I came across some guitars sold with an important discount in a shop, a few months ago. Makes that are not very famous here...And I got a Guild guitar again : I remembered how good they were (I've had one for a while a long time ago), and jumped on the opportunity...
So now I wonder about artists I may have been listening to, that played Guild guitars, or/and still do...I know that Richie Havens had been playing a D-40, I've seen that Eric Clapton has been advertising for the make some years ago : he'd been pictured with some Jumbo sized guitar, an F-50 or something...But who else ?

You guys here, have probably been discussing these things many times on the forum...But if you don't mind talking a bit more about it, I'll be happy to learn some more...
Thanks

Bernie
I guess I should be scolded, I don't count electrics as guitars.

Yes, the arched back is laminated wood but the sides were solid maple on the Tacoma built F-412.

Thanks very much Ralf. I wonder how you know all these things, such as the Tacoma solid sides - and where you got this David Gilmour's guitar label's photograph even more -😇
Nice of you to take the time.
I don't really know how solid sides can interact with tone, but it is an interesting thing to think about...

It's maple, so a F-412. Rosewood was never color finished on the back and sides.

And if you are really curious, that is the label of that very guitar, so she was a 2006 Tacoma made one.

David does not own her anymore, he sold her in 2019. And now hold on, guess what price she sold for?
USD 87,500 !!! Yes, eightyseventhousandfivehundred!

Ralf
This guitar wasn't the one used on the song Wish You Were Here original recording then, since that was recorded somewhere in the 70s...Was D. Gilmour using an other Guild then, or a Martin as a video presenting his Custom Signature 12 strings model seems to imply- ?

Since Minnesota Flats re-opend that old thread I realized that I never answered your question from 2021! He used his 1971 Martin D12-28 with S/N 290452 and his 1969 Martin D-35 with S/N 244869.

"The song opens with the sound of a car radio, which was recorded in Gilmour’s car. He played the intro on the Martin D12-28 12-string, processed to sound like it was playing through an AM radio, before overdubbing a fuller-sounding acoustic guitar solo on the D-35. This passage was then mixed to sound as though a guitarist were listening to the radio and playing along."

David Gilmour has owned multiple Guild 12 strings, both F-412 and F-512. I don't know all the specifics, and doubt anyone really does. I would certianly guess he had at least one, long before that 2006 F-412 was built, but I really don't know. "Wish You Were Here" on the live album "Pulse" from the mid 90's, sounds to me like an F-412...but that is just speculation

What he sold in the 2019 auction were his 2006 F-412 (TJ114003) and 2007 F-512 (TK030009).
Not sure if there are pictures of him from prior to 2006 with Guild 12 strings. At least I cannot remember any older pictures.
