Remember these?
I think I might have found a replacement solution from Graphtech.

Unfortunately, the trapezoidal mounting plate is for a Fender Strat, so you would have to flip three over, but at least you can put new tuners on and cover the old tuner screwholes.

I didn't ask him about the 65. I can source original tuners for the '56, if I want to drop the change.

As far as original or close to original tuners I have no suggestions other than trying to find a set that's not worn out yet!

By the way, your guitar is from 1966. If it had been from 1965, it probably would have had Grover StaTites and it would have been easy to find a replacement for those!

Sincerely,

You know, you can put whatever tuners you want, including the year before Sta-Tites, in it. You just have to fill the old screw holes, not that hard, add a little color of the plugs to match, get a conversion bushing, in needed, then Bob’s your uncle! (I’ve met Bob. Nice guy.)

My 1965 Starfire 2 has the identical tuners. Did 1966 CE 100Ds use the same tuners as 1965 Starfire 2s?

A Starfire II from 1965 would have had Grover StaTites as well, but if the guitar has the open back Japanese tuners, it most likely was completed at a later date, which means after 1965. What's the serial number of your Starfire II?

Sincerely,

Oh yes, I had some of those in my parts drawer in the ‘70s, as so many of the Japanese imports sported them. Then I was shocked to discover that Gibson had used them as standard issue on some models in 1967 - must have been a shortage of Klusons that year. At any rate, terrible tuners!

The worst I've ever encountered on a Guild.

I have a 1967 Gibson SG JR that came with Japanese strip turners but a set of Kluson Strip turner fit most the holes. As i said these were the same turners but in two strips and yes they are not very good tuners.
Thanks John

"The tuners F#$*%ing suck!"

Why so ambiguous GAD? Don't be afraid to say what you mean!

I'm only mildly interested in archtop electrics, but your piece on the Starfire III is one the most interesting and well written deep dives into what makes a specific guitar tick I've ever come across. What a resource!
