I would've bet they were Martin tuners or more likely Waverlys.

If you get 'em, Darryl, beware the seeming hex nut... It's actually a splined sleeve that should be pressed in straight into the face of the peghead wood. If you try to turn it like a nut, you'll strip the wood. Why they made these things to look like hex nuts is beyond me; just know that they aren't.

Chaz,

I've had these on a couple of low-end Guilds, and I'm surprised how good they are for tuners that were originally regarded as cheapos. I don't think anybody will pay the $175 BIN unless these came on guitars that are now collectors, like rare Gretsches etc.

I hadn't thought about why they put a hex on these. Maybe they thought it would be easier to maneuver them.

I think Sta-Tites were made from beer can pull tabs. They got the name because the manufacturers drank all that beer and stayed tight. The last thing Sta-Tites will do is stay tight.

I guess if *you're* tight enough, you won't care if your tuners are. :)

Hi Darryl,
I'm no expert on vintage tuners but unless you need an exact replacement for exactly these tuners for a collectors/stay in the box/never to be played instrument, at $175 I think I would be looking to buy a modern new set of old style tuners rather than a used set with potential issues. My experience of Grovers is that they usually have Grover on them somewhere but this would not be a excuse for racking the price up. I know that Waverlys are expensive but they are the business. Sta-tites are ok but not in the same league. I have never had a issue with Grovers generally but given a choice I would choose Schallers(German precision). If I had to buy vintage style best quality then I would go for Waverlys. The quality of Gotoh has come a long way and I have been very happy with every set I have installed.Have a browse of the Stewart MacDonald catalogue. That's my twopenny's worth(bag of chips). Steve.

and you won't care if your guitar is a -ibson.

Wright1,

Thanks for the Stew Mac tip. I need to catch up on the tuner scene. I know there are a lot of recent advances by brands such as Schaller and Sperzel. And I'm not surprised that this has caused Gotoh to improve.

I fitted a set of Sperzel locking tuners to a Tele I made for my son and I don't think I would do it again. Very expensive and although they hold well enough they feel like they grind. Not what I was expecting from all the hype about them and the supposed quality.Steve.

The only Sperzels I can remember were on a starfire 3 I had about 15 years ago, and I took them off and put something else on. They felt gritty to me, like they needed some graphite powder sprayed into them.
