So... You are looking at a $3,000 guitar and you are afraid if it is mistake it will cost you return shipping of $75. Why don't you flip that and pretend you are buying insurance with a $75 deductible that will pay if the guitar is a mistake?

I'm not opposed to GC - it has its place - but there are a lot more GC horror stories than success stories and the success stories usually involve buying used or vintage equipment.

Very true! That’s why I sought advice here. Definitely helps with my decision. There are a couple small dealers Guild lists within striking distance. I’ll call them too. The plan is to love it!

After everything I’ve listened to and read, the D-55 is most likely my next guitar. The only thing that would change my mind would be the boomy Martin sound for bluegrass. But, the Guild tones I’ve heard online are the sound I’ve been wanting for a while. And I play more than bluegrass. It’s just scary, and most would say crazy, to buy such an expensive guitar without playing one. But I figure if I don’t like it I can always return it and do the Martin thing.

Any insight on the D-55 neck profile? I’ve read that it’s a little thin/flat? I was hoping it would be similar to the D-40 traditional, but I don’t think it is. I’m not a fan of flat necks, but I’d get used to it for great tone.
Surprisingly enough, Oxnard shows specific thicknesses for the D55 neck, which they don't for the D40 Traditional:
Neck ShapeC Shape
Nut Width1 11/16" (43mm)
Neck Thickness 1st Fret21mm
Neck Thickness 9th Fret22.5mm

Y'gotta drop down past the playing demos to the "Show full specs" button on their pages.

I wonder if it has shoulders, or it’s a “C” as listed? Either way, I plan to adapt to it.

Maybe it's a coastal thing since in many situations California is about 10 years ahead of the rest of the nation? I can patronize a number of local businesses that still value their participation in the community and can still stay in business in times of scarcity without price gouging. But maybe in 10 years they won't be around?
Yes, the rent on businesses here is extreme. But one should not lump California, or anywhere else, as any one entity, as there are still plenty of small towns that are economically depressed, and you can't tell me those stores you shop at don't loose a chunk of business to the Sweetwaters of the world. I'm not going to buy it. Even a store like Gryphon could not exist except for the support, now second generation, of a landlord that plain wants them to be there. It has been so since day one. Their "market" rate rent would probably be $15,000 a month.

Being ahead of the curve is not always a good thing for sure. Life is one big compromise. When I wonder how folks afford all the toys I remember how much of my money goes to the bank.

You could buy both on a CC and return one. Extreme measures for extreme times. Of course finding them is a problem.

I saw that. The profile on my D-18 is “low profile” and measures .596” at the 1st and .646” at the 10th. That’s 15.1mm and 16.4mm. Should be interesting. I’m glad for the thickness.

It also looks like the Guild has a scale length that’s 6mm longer.

Nah, not a CC guy. Don’t even have one. Prepared to wait, but it won’t be easy!

"Word". I think too many folks don't realize sometimes ya gotta adapt to the instrument in question a bit. Had to do it a lot with my F65ce, after playing full-depth no-cutaway dreads for almost 25 years.

I screwed up my own credit out of over-confidence in job security back in early '90's, swore to go without until about '04 when my long-term bank offered me a card with very good terms. At the time, a CC was a frequent security deposit need for things like car rentals and plane flights, so went head and took it.

Also built up a good payment history which has other ancillary advantages (like better finance rates on vehicle and potentially house purchases).

Over time started getting the 0% balance transfer and cash-back offers, here's the trick:

Never charge more than you can actually pay cash for, never carry a card around with you (if you've got a Visa/Mastercard logo'd debit card), and once you get the cash payout, apply it to the balance. Keep making payments until the 0% on new purchases period is about to expire, then pay it off. ;)

By that time you'll likely have another balance transfer offer for something like 2% flat fee ($30.00 on $1500.00). But if they're gonna give you $200 after the "required activities", you're w-a-a-ay ahead of the game.

What they're hoping is that like a lot of folks you'll "splurge" or violate other conditions of the "deal" and start qualifying for interest charges.
So I only ever used a new card for stuff I'd be buying anyway, just to build up the purchase volume to qualify for the cash back.

Then back in the file cabinet it'd go.

Of course you need to meet certain criteria to qualify, and if you've got a CC logo'd debit card you don't need a CC for things like security deposits anymore, unless the debit card's got a daily limit that's frequently inadequate.
